Peres

Judah's firstborn twin son

PatriarkatPatriarchc. 1850 BC

Peres was the son of Judah and Tamar, born under dramatic circumstances as a twin brother to Zerah. His name means 'breach' because he broke out first at birth. He became the ancestor of a significant lineage that includes King David and ultimately Jesus Christ.

The Birth - The Breach

During the birth, Serah put out her hand first, but Perez broke through and was born first. The midwife exclaimed, 'What a breakthrough you have made!' and he was named Perez.

27When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
28As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it around his wrist, saying, "This one came out first."
29But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez.
30Then his brother came out, the one with the scarlet thread on his wrist, and he was named Zerah.

Tamar's Righteousness

Perez was conceived when Tamar, who had been denied her rightful husband Shelah, disguised herself as a prostitute and slept with Judah. Judah later acknowledged that she was more righteous than he was.

13Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is on his way up to Timnah to shear his sheep."
14So she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself up, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, on the road to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah was grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
15When Judah saw her, he took her for a prostitute, since she had covered her face.
16He turned aside to her by the road and said, "Come, let me sleep with you"—for he did not know she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me for sleeping with you?"
17"I will send you a young goat from my flock," he said. "Will you give me a pledge until you send it?" she asked.
18"What pledge should I give you?" he said. She answered, "Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand." So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.
26Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.

Ancestor of the Perez Lineage

Perez had sons named Hezron and Hamul, and through Hezron the family line continued that would lead to King David.

12the sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah—but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan—and the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul;

In Jesus' Genealogy

Perez is mentioned in Matthew's genealogy as an important ancestor of Jesus Christ, along with his mother Tamar, who is one of the few women named in the lineage.

The Greek repeats the verb ἐγέννησεν ("begot, fathered") in every clause; for oral reading the English carries it forward from the previous verse and states it only once per generation, giving the list a steady, chantable rhythm. "Was the father of" renders a verb that in this genealogy simply marks descent, not necessarily immediate paternity. The names appear here in their familiar Hebrew Scripture forms (Perez, Zerah, Hezron, Ram) rather than transliterations of Matthew's Greek spellings (Phares, Zara, Esrom, Aram), so that the hearer recognizes the figures from earlier narratives. The phrase ἐκ τῆς Θαμάρ is rendered "by Tamar"; alternatives are "whose mother was Tamar" or "from Tamar."

Kielitiede

The Greek preposition ἐκ with the genitive ("out of, from") is the standard way of naming the mother in a birth notice, so ἐκ τῆς Θαμάρ marks maternal origin. The definite article before her name is normal Greek usage with proper names and carries no special emphasis in English. The Hebrew names behind the Greek forms carry meanings tied to the birth story: Perez suggests "a breaking out, a breach," and Zerah is linked to "brightness" or "scarlet dawn" — echoing the scarlet thread tied to the hand that emerged first.

Historia

Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah; when denied her right to a levirate marriage after being widowed, she disguised herself and secured offspring from Judah himself, and Judah declared her more in the right than he was. Perez and Zerah were the twins born from that encounter. Genealogies of this era normally listed fathers only, so the naming of a mother is deliberate. The line through Perez became the leading clan of Judah, and the intervening generations to Hezron and Ram are compressed from tribal records.

Teologia

Tamar is the first of four women named in this genealogy, all of them associated with irregular or outsider circumstances. Their presence signals from the outset that the lineage of the Messiah runs through human failure, scandal, and unexpected grace rather than through unblemished pedigree — a theme this Gospel develops in its portrayal of whom God welcomes. Naming the non-elect twin Zerah alongside Perez also preserves the memory that God's choice within a family is his own to make.

Tekstikritiikki

The manuscript tradition is stable here, with only minor spelling variation in the transliterated names (for example Ζάρα/Ζάρε, Ἐσρώμ/Ἑσρώμ). At the name Ram, the parallel genealogy in another Gospel shows a more complicated tradition, where some witnesses insert additional names between Hezron and Amminadab; Matthew's shorter form follows the list preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Blessing over Ruth's Marriage

When Boaz took Ruth as his wife, the people blessed them with the wish that their house might be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.

12And through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah."
