Judah

Ancestor of the Royal Lineage

Tunnetaan myös nimellä: Jud, Judah, Yehuda, Judas

PatriarkatPatriarchc. 1750–1650 BC

Judah was Jacob's fourth son with Leah and the ancestor of the tribe of Judah. From him came the royal line and eventually the Messiah. He played a key role in Joseph's story by suggesting to sell him and later offering himself as a hostage for Benjamin.

The Proposal to Sell Joseph

When the brothers wanted to kill Joseph, Judah suggested selling him to the Ishmaelites instead.

26Judah said to his brothers, "What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?
27Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him. After all, he is our brother, our own flesh." His brothers agreed.
28So when the Midianite traders came by, they pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver, and they took Joseph to Egypt.

Tamar and the Twins

Judah had sons Perez and Zerah with his daughter-in-law Tamar. Through Perez came the royal line.

27When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
28As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it around his wrist, saying, "This one came out first."
29But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez.
30Then his brother came out, the one with the scarlet thread on his wrist, and he was named Zerah.

The Hostage Offer for Benjamin

Judah offered himself as a hostage for Benjamin before Joseph and delivered a moving speech.

18Then Judah came near to him and said, "Please, my lord, let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and do not let your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.
32For your servant pledged himself for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before my father all my life.'
33So now, please let your servant remain as my lord's slave in place of the boy, and let the boy go back with his brothers.
34For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? I could not bear to see the misery that would come upon my father."

Jacob's Blessing

Jacob prophesied that Judah would hold the scepter and that it would not depart until the Prince of Peace came.

8Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons will bow down before you.
9Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He crouches, he lies down like a lion, like a lioness—who dares rouse him?
10until he comes to whom it belongs, and the obedience of the nations is his.[^1] [^1]: Hebrew Shiloh; the meaning of the word is uncertain.

In the Line of the Messiah

Through Judah and Tamar came Perez, from him David, and finally Jesus Christ.

2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
*
Käännös

The Greek verb ἐγέννησεν literally means 'begot' or 'fathered.' Rendering it as 'was the father of' keeps the sense while sounding natural when read aloud. After the first clause the verb is not repeated in English ('Isaac the father of Jacob'), matching the compact rhythm of the Greek, which repeats the verb but links each link with a light connective δέ. That δέ is left untranslated here; rendering it as 'and' or 'then' each time would clog the cadence of a list meant to be heard rather than parsed.

Käännös

The names are given in their traditional English forms, which come through Greek transliteration of the Hebrew: Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), Ἰσαάκ (Isaac), Ἰακώβ (Jacob), Ἰούδας (Judah). Note that the Greek form Ἰούδας is the same name later borne by Judas Iscariot and Jude; English distinguishes the patriarch as 'Judah' to match the Old Testament usage.

Kielitiede

γεννάω in the active voice is normally used of the father's role in begetting, while the passive is used of the mother giving birth. The relentless repetition of ἐγέννησεν τὸν... forms a drumbeat structure typical of Hebrew genealogies (Hebrew hôlîd, 'begot'), and the Greek here reads like translation Greek shaped by the Scriptures of Israel. The accusative article τόν before each name marks the son as the object of the begetting.

Teologia

The phrase 'and his brothers' breaks the strict father-to-son pattern. It signals that the line runs through Judah but that the whole family — the twelve tribes — belongs to the story. Israel's history is not reduced to a single thread; the chosen line carries the others with it.

Teologia

Beginning with Abraham roots Jesus in the covenant promise that in Abraham all nations would be blessed, and the Isaac–Jacob sequence traces the promise through the sons of election rather than the firstborn (Ishmael and Esau are passed over silently). Judah is singled out because of the ancient oracle that the ruler's staff would not depart from Judah, making him the tribe of kingship and thus of the Messiah.

Historia

Genealogies were public and political documents in the ancient world, establishing tribal membership, inheritance rights, priestly or royal legitimacy, and standing within the community. Records of descent were kept and consulted, and claims to Davidic ancestry were known in the first century. This opening triad of patriarchs would have been instantly recognizable to any Jewish hearer as the foundation story of the nation.

Tekstikritiikki

The manuscript tradition for this verse is remarkably stable. Minor variations appear only in the spelling of the names, reflecting differing transliteration habits of Hebrew names into Greek, and in whether ἐγέννησεν is spelled with one or two nu's in some witnesses. Nothing affects the sense.

3Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,
*
Käännös

The Greek repeats the verb ἐγέννησεν ("begot, fathered") in every clause; for oral reading the English carries it forward from the previous verse and states it only once per generation, giving the list a steady, chantable rhythm. "Was the father of" renders a verb that in this genealogy simply marks descent, not necessarily immediate paternity. The names appear here in their familiar Hebrew Scripture forms (Perez, Zerah, Hezron, Ram) rather than transliterations of Matthew's Greek spellings (Phares, Zara, Esrom, Aram), so that the hearer recognizes the figures from earlier narratives. The phrase ἐκ τῆς Θαμάρ is rendered "by Tamar"; alternatives are "whose mother was Tamar" or "from Tamar."

Kielitiede

The Greek preposition ἐκ with the genitive ("out of, from") is the standard way of naming the mother in a birth notice, so ἐκ τῆς Θαμάρ marks maternal origin. The definite article before her name is normal Greek usage with proper names and carries no special emphasis in English. The Hebrew names behind the Greek forms carry meanings tied to the birth story: Perez suggests "a breaking out, a breach," and Zerah is linked to "brightness" or "scarlet dawn" — echoing the scarlet thread tied to the hand that emerged first.

Historia

Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah; when denied her right to a levirate marriage after being widowed, she disguised herself and secured offspring from Judah himself, and Judah declared her more in the right than he was. Perez and Zerah were the twins born from that encounter. Genealogies of this era normally listed fathers only, so the naming of a mother is deliberate. The line through Perez became the leading clan of Judah, and the intervening generations to Hezron and Ram are compressed from tribal records.

Teologia

Tamar is the first of four women named in this genealogy, all of them associated with irregular or outsider circumstances. Their presence signals from the outset that the lineage of the Messiah runs through human failure, scandal, and unexpected grace rather than through unblemished pedigree — a theme this Gospel develops in its portrayal of whom God welcomes. Naming the non-elect twin Zerah alongside Perez also preserves the memory that God's choice within a family is his own to make.

Tekstikritiikki

The manuscript tradition is stable here, with only minor spelling variation in the transliterated names (for example Ζάρα/Ζάρε, Ἐσρώμ/Ἑσρώμ). At the name Ram, the parallel genealogy in another Gospel shows a more complicated tradition, where some witnesses insert additional names between Hezron and Amminadab; Matthew's shorter form follows the list preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures.
