Etusivu Henkilöt Potiphera Potiphera was an Egyptian priest in On (Heliopolis) and the father of Asenath, who was given to Joseph as a wife by Pharaoh. Through this marriage, Potiphera became Joseph's father-in-law and the grandfather of Manasseh and Ephraim, who later became the ancestors of two of the tribes of Israel.

50 Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. hepr וּלְיוֹסֵ֤ף יֻלַּד֙ שְׁנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים בְּטֶ֥רֶם תָּב֖וֹא שְׁנַ֣ת הָרָעָ֑ב אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָֽלְדָה־לּוֹ֙ אָֽסְנַ֔ת בַּת־פּ֥וֹטִי[c] פֶ֖רַע כֹּהֵ֥ן אֽוֹן׃
51 Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, saying, "God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father's house." hepr וַיִּקְרָ֥א יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־שֵׁ֥ם הַבְּכ֖וֹר מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה כִּֽי־נַשַּׁ֤נִי אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־כָּל־עֲמָלִ֔י וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי׃
52 The second he named Ephraim, saying, "God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction." hepr וְאֵ֛ת שֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖י קָרָ֣א אֶפְרָ֑יִם כִּֽי־הִפְרַ֥נִי אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּאֶ֥רֶץ עָנְיִֽי׃
