Simon (Jesus' brother)

Jesus' brother

Jeesuksen aikaDisciplec. 5 BC - unknown

Simon was one of Jesus' four brothers, sons of Joseph and Mary. He is mentioned together with his brothers James, Joses, and Judas in the Gospels, where it appears that Jesus' family initially did not believe in him as the Messiah.

Mentioned as Jesus' brother in Nazareth

When Jesus taught in the synagogue of his hometown, the people asked if this was not the carpenter's son, and mentioned his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas.

55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τοῦ τέκτονος υἱός; ⸀οὐχ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ λέγεται Μαριὰμ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ ⸀Ἰωσὴφ καὶ Σίμων καὶ Ἰούδας;
56Aren't all his sisters here with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ πᾶσαι πρὸς ἡμᾶς εἰσιν; πόθεν οὖν τούτῳ ταῦτα πάντα;

Mentioned in the Gospel of Mark

Mark also confirms that Simon was one of Jesus' brothers when Jesus was rejected in his hometown of Nazareth.

3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

Jesus' brothers did not believe in him

John tells us that Jesus' brothers did not believe in him during his earthly ministry, even though they later came to faith.

3so his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples can see the works you are doing.
4For no one acts in secret while wanting to be known in public. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.
5For not even his brothers believed in him.

Gathered with the apostles after the ascension

After Jesus' ascension, his brothers were gathered in prayer with the apostles and other believers in Jerusalem, indicating that they had come to faith.

14They all devoted themselves with one mind to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
