In Matthew 13, Jesus tells seven parables about the kingdom of heaven. They reveal mysteries about how God's kingdom works in the world.

The Sower

The seed falls on four types of soil - a path, rocky ground, among thorns, and good soil. It is about how people receive God's word.

The Weeds

An enemy sows weeds among the wheat. Both grow together until the harvest (judgment).

The Mustard Seed

The smallest seed grows into a large tree. God's kingdom starts small but grows into something enormous.

A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough. God's kingdom spreads invisibly but thoroughly.

A man finds a treasure and sells everything to buy that field. God's kingdom is worth everything.

The Parable of the Mustard SeedMML

God's kingdom is compared to the smallest seed that grows into a large tree.

31He put another parable before them: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.

32It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches."

53When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.

54Coming to his hometown, he taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked.

55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?

56Aren't all his sisters here with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"

57And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household."

58And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

1Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astounded. "Where did this man get all this?" they said. "What is this wisdom given to him? And such miracles worked by his hands?

3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house."

5And he could do no miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around the surrounding villages, teaching.

16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom, and stood up to read.

17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and unrolling it he found the place where it was written:

18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are crushed,

19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him.

21He began to speak to them: "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

22They all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that came from his mouth. And they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

23So he said to them, "No doubt you will quote me this proverb: 'Doctor, heal yourself.' You will say, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard you did in Capernaum.'

24Truly I tell you," he went on, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

25In truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months and a severe famine came over the whole land.

26Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian."

28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was filled with rage.

29They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, intending to throw him off the cliff.

30But he walked right through the middle of them and went on his way.

The Parable of the SowerMML

One of the few parables explained by Jesus himself.

2Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the shore.

3And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow.

4As he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once, because the soil was shallow,

6but when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered because it had no root.

7Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.

8But other seed fell on good soil and produced a crop—some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

9Whoever has ears, let him hear."

10The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"

11He answered, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

12For whoever has will be given more, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

13This is why I speak to them in parables: though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled: 'You will listen and listen, but never understand; you will look and look, but never perceive.'

15For this people's heart has grown calloused; they hear with difficulty, and they have shut their eyes—otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.

16But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

17Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.

18You, then, listen to the parable of the sower.

19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

20The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,

21but he has no root in himself and lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

22The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

23But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and produces a hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold."

1Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a huge crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the water, while the whole crowd was on the shore at the water's edge.

2He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:

3"Listen! A sower went out to sow.

4And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once, because the soil was shallow,

6but when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.

7Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, so it produced no crop.

8And other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew, and produced a crop—thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown."

9And he said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."

10When he was alone, those around him, along with the Twelve, asked him about the parables.

11He told them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to those outside everything comes in parables,

12so that they may look and look, yet never see, and hear and hear, yet never understand; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven."

13Then he said to them, "Don't you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of them?

14The sower sows the word.

15Some people are like the seed along the path, where the word is sown: as soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.

16Others are like the seed sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they receive it at once with joy,

17but they have no root in themselves and last only a little while. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately fall away.

18Others are like the seed sown among thorns. These are the ones who hear the word,

19but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the craving for other things come in and choke the word, and it produces nothing.

20But those sown on good soil are the ones who hear the word, welcome it, and bear fruit—thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown."

4When a large crowd had gathered, with people streaming in to him from town after town, he spoke this parable:

5"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell along the path, where it was trampled underfoot and the birds of the sky ate it up.

6Some fell on rock, and when it came up it withered, because it had no moisture.

7Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.

8And some fell into good soil, and it grew and produced a hundredfold." As he said this, he called out, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear!"

9His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

10He said, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest I speak in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

11This is what the parable means: The seed is the word of God.

12The ones along the path are those who hear; then the devil comes and takes the word away from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

13The ones on the rock are those who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root; they believe for a while, and in the time of testing they fall away.

14As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and their fruit never ripens.

15But the seed in the good soil—these are the ones who hear the word with a noble and good heart, hold it fast, and bear fruit with patient endurance.

But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds appeared as well.
The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Master, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
'An enemy has done this,' he said. The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling up the weeds, you may uproot the wheat along with them.
Let both grow together until the harvest. At harvest time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat into my barn.'"
He put another parable before them: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.
It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches."
He told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and worked into three measures of flour until it was all leavened."
Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables; he did not say anything to them without a parable.
So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world."
Then he left the crowds and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field."
The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,
and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
As the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.
The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who practice lawlessness,
and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let him hear.
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his joy he went and sold everything he had and bought that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls.
When he found one pearl of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net let down into the sea that caught fish of every kind.
When it was full, they hauled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.
This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous
and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
"Have you understood all this?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they replied.
He said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old."
When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.
Coming to his hometown, he taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked.
"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
