Seraiah's arrival at Gedaliah

Tanhumet's son Seraiah was among the commanders who came to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, in Mizpah after the destruction of Jerusalem to submit to Babylonian rule.

23When all the army commanders and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they came to him at Mizpah: Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, together with their men.
8they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah: Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite—they and their men.

Gedaliah swears loyalty

Gedaliah swore to Seraiah, Tanhumet's son, and the other officers that they need not fear the Chaldeans, and urged them to settle in the land.

24Gedaliah gave them and their men his oath: "Do not be afraid of the Chaldean officials. Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you."
9Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore an oath to them and their men: "Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Settle in the land, serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
10As for me, I am staying at Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. But you, gather in the wine, the summer fruit, and the oil; store them in your jars, and live in the towns you have taken over."

Warning about Ishmael's conspiracy

Johanan and the other commanders, including those around Tanhumet's son Seraiah, warned Gedaliah that Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, planned to kill him.

13Now Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah
14and said to him, "Are you not aware that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?" But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
15Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at Mizpah: "Let me go and strike down Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know. Why should he take your life and scatter all the Judeans who have gathered around you, so that the remnant of Judah perishes?"
16But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, "Do not do this thing, for what you are saying about Ishmael is not true."

The Murder of Gedaliah

Despite the warnings, Gedaliah was killed by Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, which had dramatic consequences for the remaining group in Judah.

25But in the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood, came with ten men and struck Gedaliah down, killing him along with the Judeans and the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah.
1In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, who was of royal descent and one of the king's chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there at Mizpah,
2Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the man whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
3Ishmael also killed all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the fighting men.

Flight to Egypt

After the murder of Gedaliah, Serajah, son of Tahpenes, and the other commanders feared Babylonian revenge and took the people with them to Egypt against the prophet Jeremiah's advice.

2Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are lying! The LORD our God did not send you to say, 'Do not go to Egypt to settle there.'
4So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people refused to obey the voice of the LORD, which told them to stay in the land of Judah.
5Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the whole remnant of Judah—those who had come back from all the nations where they had been scattered, to live in the land of Judah:
7They went to the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they came as far as Tahpanhes.
