The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had released him from Ramah. He had taken him bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being deported to Babylon.

The captain of the guard took Jeremiah aside and said to him, "The LORD your God pronounced this disaster against this place,

and now the LORD has brought it about and done just as he said. Because you sinned against the LORD and would not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you.

But now, see, I am freeing you today from the chains on your wrists. If you wish to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you. But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, then stay. Look, the whole land lies before you; go wherever it seems good and right to you.

If you choose to remain, then go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and live with him among the people; or go anywhere else you please." Then the captain of the guard gave him provisions and a gift and let him go.

So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left in the land.

When all the commanders of the forces who were out in the open country, along with their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land, and had put under his charge the men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been deported to Babylon—

they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah: Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite—they and their men.

Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore an oath to them and their men: "Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Settle in the land, serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.

As for me, I am staying at Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. But you, gather in the wine, the summer fruit, and the oil; store them in your jars, and live in the towns you have taken over."

And when all the Judeans in Moab, among the Ammonites, in Edom, and in all the other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed over them Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan,

they all returned from every place where they had been scattered and came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered in wine and summer fruit in great abundance.

Now Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

and said to him, "Are you not aware that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?" But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at Mizpah: "Let me go and strike down Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know. Why should he take your life and scatter all the Judeans who have gathered around you, so that the remnant of Judah perishes?"

But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, "Do not do this thing, for what you are saying about Ishmael is not true."

People

Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan was the Babylonian-appointed governor over Judah after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. His family had a long history of supporting the prophet Jeremiah—his father Ahikam had protected Jeremiah from being killed during the reign of King Jehoiakim (Jer 26:24), and his grandfather Shaphan was a scribe under King Josiah and played a central role in the discovery of the Book of the Law (2 Kgs 22:8-14). Gedaliah’s governorship was short-lived; he was murdered by Ishmael only a few months after being appointed.

Nebuzaradan, chief of the guard was a high-ranking Babylonian officer who led the deportation of Judah’s population. His title "rav-tabbachim" (רַב־טַבָּחִים) literally means "chief butcher" or "chief of executioners," but served as the designation for the leader of the king’s guard. His acknowledgment that Judah’s fall was the Lord’s judgment (vv. 2-3) is remarkable—either as an expression of genuine theological insight or as diplomatic rhetoric toward Jeremiah.

Ishmael, son of Nethaniah was of royal lineage (cf. Jer 41:1) and likely represented a faction opposed to Babylonian rule. His connection to Baalis, king of the Ammonites, suggests political intrigue against the Babylonian administration.

Places

Ramah was located about 8 kilometers north of Jerusalem and served as a gathering place where the Babylonians organized the captives before deportation. The site also holds prophetic significance through Jer 31:15, where Rachel is described weeping for her children in Ramah.

Mizpah (הַמִּצְפָּה) became the new administrative center for the remaining population in Judah. The city was situated about 12 kilometers north of the destroyed Jerusalem, within the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. Mizpah already had a long history as a religious and political gathering place in Israel (Judg 20:1; 1 Sam 7:5-6).

Netophah (v. 8) was a small town near Bethlehem in Judah, known as the home of some of David’s warriors (2 Sam 23:28-29).

Chapter-Specific Findings

In 1932, at Tell en-Nasbeh (identified as biblical Mizpah), a seal with the inscription "Belonging to Jaazaniah, the king’s servant" was discovered. This may possibly be the same person as Jezaniah (יִזַנְיָהוּ) mentioned in verse 8, who came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, although the names are not entirely identical. The find confirms the existence of individuals from this period and highlights Mizpah’s importance as an administrative center. Archaeological excavations at Tell en-Nasbeh have also revealed extensive Iron Age settlement consistent with the city’s role during this period.
