In Revelation 7:4 the 144000 are described as the sealed ones from all twelve tribes of Israel – 12000 from each tribe. The number is the product of 12 × 12 × 1000, where 12 symbolizes God’s people and 1000 represents a large complete multitude. In Revelation 14:1 the 144000 appear again, now standing together with the Lamb on Mount Zion, with his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. They sing a new song that no one else can learn – only those who have been bought from the earth (Rev 14:3). Many theologians interpret the number symbolically rather than literally, as an expression of the complete multitude of all God’s chosen people throughout history, where the sealing and the new song emphasize their special belonging to God and the Lamb. The mathematical structure 12 × 12 × 1,000 unites the symbolism of both covenants: twelve tribes (the old covenant) and twelve apostles (the new covenant), multiplied by 1,000, which in biblical context denotes an immeasurable yet complete multitude (cf.
