The Demon-Possessed Man in the Country of the Gerasenes
Jesus delivers a demon-possessed man in the country of the Gerasenes. The evil spirits, calling themselves Legion because they are many, ask to be sent into a herd of pigs. Jesus allows them, and the herd rushes down a steep bank into the sea and drowns. The healed man is sent home to tell what the Lord has done for him.
Marc 5,1-20
1They came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.
Καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν ⸀Γερασηνῶν.
2As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs to meet him.
καὶ ⸂ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ⸃ ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου ⸂εὐθὺς ὑπήντησεν⸃ αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν μνημείων ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ,
3He lived among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain.
ὃς τὴν κατοίκησιν εἶχεν ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν, καὶ ⸂οὐδὲ ἁλύσει οὐκέτι⸃ οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο αὐτὸν δῆσαι
4He had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he tore the chains apart and smashed the shackles to pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
διὰ τὸ αὐτὸν πολλάκις πέδαις καὶ ἁλύσεσι δεδέσθαι καὶ διεσπάσθαι ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ τὰς ἁλύσεις καὶ τὰς πέδας συντετρῖφθαι, καὶ οὐδεὶς ⸂ἴσχυεν αὐτὸν⸃ δαμάσαι·
5Night and day, without ceasing, he was among the tombs and in the hills, screaming and cutting himself with stones.
καὶ διὰ παντὸς νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας ἐν τοῖς ⸂μνήμασιν καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσιν⸃ ἦν κράζων καὶ κατακόπτων ἑαυτὸν λίθοις.
6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell down before him,
⸂καὶ ἰδὼν⸃ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔδραμεν καὶ προσεκύνησεν ⸀αὐτόν,
7crying out at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you by God, do not torment me!"
καὶ κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ⸀λέγει· Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου; ὁρκίζω σε τὸν θεόν, μή με βασανίσῃς.
8For Jesus had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
ἔλεγεν γὰρ αὐτῷ· Ἔξελθε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
9Then he asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "My name is Legion, for we are many."
καὶ ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν· Τί ⸂ὄνομά σοι⸃; καὶ ⸂λέγει αὐτῷ⸃· ⸀Λεγιὼν ὄνομά μοι, ὅτι πολλοί ἐσμεν·
10And he begged him urgently not to send them out of the region.
καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν πολλὰ ἵνα μὴ ⸀αὐτὰ ἀποστείλῃ ἔξω τῆς χώρας.
11A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,
ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πρὸς τῷ ὄρει ἀγέλη χοίρων μεγάλη βοσκομένη·
12and the spirits begged him, "Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them."
καὶ παρεκάλεσαν ⸀αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Πέμψον ἡμᾶς εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, ἵνα εἰς αὐτοὺς εἰσέλθωμεν.
13He gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand of them—rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν ⸀αὐτοῖς. καὶ ἐξελθόντα τὰ πνεύματα τὰ ἀκάθαρτα εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, ⸀ὡς δισχίλιοι, καὶ ἐπνίγοντο ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ.
14The herdsmen fled and spread the news in the town and in the countryside, and the people came out to see what had happened.
⸂Καὶ οἱ⸃ βόσκοντες ⸀αὐτοὺς ἔφυγον καὶ ⸀ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς· καὶ ⸀ἦλθον ἰδεῖν τί ἐστιν τὸ γεγονός.
15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion sitting there, dressed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
καὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ θεωροῦσιν τὸν δαιμονιζόμενον ⸀καθήμενον ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα, τὸν ἐσχηκότα τὸν ⸀λεγιῶνα, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν.
16Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs as well.
⸂καὶ διηγήσαντο⸃ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐγένετο τῷ δαιμονιζομένῳ καὶ περὶ τῶν χοίρων.
17Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their district.
καὶ ἤρξαντο παρακαλεῖν αὐτὸν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν.
18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to stay with him.
καὶ ⸀ἐμβαίνοντος αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πλοῖον παρεκάλει αὐτὸν ὁ δαιμονισθεὶς ἵνα ⸂μετʼ αὐτοῦ ᾖ⸃.
19But Jesus would not allow it. "Go home to your own people," he said, "and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
⸀καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν αὐτόν, ἀλλὰ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου πρὸς τοὺς σούς, καὶ ⸀ἀπάγγειλον αὐτοῖς ὅσα ⸂ὁ κύριός σοι⸃ πεποίηκεν καὶ ἠλέησέν σε.
20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν ἐν τῇ Δεκαπόλει ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ πάντες ἐθαύμαζον.
Matthieu 8,28-34
28When he reached the other side, in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men came out of the tombs to meet him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
Καὶ ⸂ἐλθόντος αὐτοῦ⸃ εἰς τὸ πέραν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν ⸀Γαδαρηνῶν ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ δύο δαιμονιζόμενοι ἐκ τῶν μνημείων ἐξερχόμενοι, χαλεποὶ λίαν ὥστε μὴ ἰσχύειν τινὰ παρελθεῖν διὰ τῆς ὁδοῦ ἐκείνης.
29They cried out, "What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?"
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔκραξαν λέγοντες· Τί ἡμῖν καὶ ⸀σοί, υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ; ἦλθες ὧδε πρὸ καιροῦ βασανίσαι ἡμᾶς;
30Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
ἦν δὲ μακρὰν ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀγέλη χοίρων πολλῶν βοσκομένη.
31The demons begged him, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."
οἱ δὲ δαίμονες παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Εἰ ἐκβάλλεις ἡμᾶς, ⸂ἀπόστειλον ἡμᾶς⸃ εἰς τὴν ἀγέλην τῶν χοίρων.
32He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ὑπάγετε. οἱ δὲ ἐξελθόντες ἀπῆλθον εἰς ⸂τοὺς χοίρους⸃· καὶ ἰδοὺ ὥρμησεν πᾶσα ἡ ⸀ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ ἀπέθανον ἐν τοῖς ὕδασιν.
33The herdsmen ran off, went into the town, and reported everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
οἱ δὲ βόσκοντες ἔφυγον, καὶ ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπήγγειλαν πάντα καὶ τὰ τῶν δαιμονιζομένων.
34Then the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶσα ἡ πόλις ἐξῆλθεν εἰς ⸀ὑπάντησιν τῷ Ἰησοῦ, καὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν παρεκάλεσαν ὅπως μεταβῇ ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν.
Luc 8,26-39
26They sailed on to the region of the Gerasenes, which lies across the lake from Galilee.
Καὶ κατέπλευσαν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν ⸀Γερασηνῶν, ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντιπέρα τῆς Γαλιλαίας.
27As he stepped ashore, a man from the town who was possessed by demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and had not lived in a house, but among the tombs.
ἐξελθόντι δὲ αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ⸀ὑπήντησεν ἀνήρ τις ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ⸀ἔχων δαιμόνια· ⸂καὶ χρόνῳ ἱκανῷ οὐκ ἐνεδύσατο ἱμάτιον⸃, καὶ ἐν οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἔμενεν ἀλλʼ ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν.
28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me!"
ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν ⸀Ἰησοῦν ἀνακράξας προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἶπεν· Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου; δέομαί σου, μή με βασανίσῃς·
29For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilderness.
⸀παρήγγελλεν γὰρ τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ ἐξελθεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. πολλοῖς γὰρ χρόνοις συνηρπάκει αὐτόν, καὶ ⸀ἐδεσμεύετο ἁλύσεσιν καὶ πέδαις φυλασσόμενος, καὶ διαρρήσσων τὰ δεσμὰ ἠλαύνετο ⸀ὑπὸ τοῦ ⸀δαιμονίου εἰς τὰς ἐρήμους.
30Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he said, for many demons had entered him.
ἐπηρώτησεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ⸀Ἰησοῦς· Τί σοι ⸂ὄνομά ἐστιν⸃; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Λεγιών, ὅτι ⸂εἰσῆλθεν δαιμόνια πολλὰ⸃ εἰς αὐτόν.
31And they begged him not to order them to go into the abyss.
καὶ ⸀παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μὴ ἐπιτάξῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν.
32A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs. He gave them permission.
Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἀγέλη χοίρων ἱκανῶν ⸀βοσκομένη ἐν τῷ ὄρει· καὶ ⸀παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν· καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς.
33So the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
ἐξελθόντα δὲ τὰ δαιμόνια ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ ἀπεπνίγη.
34When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside.
Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ βόσκοντες τὸ ⸀γεγονὸς ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς.
35People went out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind—and they were afraid.
ἐξῆλθον δὲ ἰδεῖν τὸ γεγονὸς καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ εὗρον καθήμενον τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀφʼ οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ⸀ἐξῆλθεν ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν.
36Those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ ⸀αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιμονισθείς.
37Then the whole crowd from the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.
καὶ ⸀ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν ⸀Γερασηνῶν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπʼ αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο· αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς ⸀εἰς πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν.
38The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,
ἐδεῖτο δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἀφʼ οὗ ἐξεληλύθει τὰ δαιμόνια εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ· ἀπέλυσεν δὲ ⸀αὐτὸν λέγων·
39"Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So he went and proclaimed throughout the whole town how much Jesus had done for him.
Ὑπόστρεφε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου, καὶ διηγοῦ ὅσα ⸂σοι ἐποίησεν⸃ ὁ θεός. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καθʼ ὅλην τὴν πόλιν κηρύσσων ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς.
