The Crucifixion
Jesus is crucified at Golgotha between two thieves. Darkness falls over the land, the temple veil tears, and Jesus dies after crying out his last words.
Matthieu 27,32-56
32On their way out they came across a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross.
Ἐξερχόμενοι δὲ εὗρον ἄνθρωπον Κυρηναῖον ὀνόματι Σίμωνα· τοῦτον ἠγγάρευσαν ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ.
33When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means "Place of the Skull,"
Καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Γολγοθᾶ, ὅ ἐστιν ⸂Κρανίου Τόπος λεγόμενος⸃,
34they gave him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he refused to drink it.
ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πιεῖν ⸀οἶνον μετὰ χολῆς μεμιγμένον· καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκ ⸀ἠθέλησεν πιεῖν.
35When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots,
σταυρώσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον,
36and they sat down and kept watch over him there.
καὶ καθήμενοι ἐτήρουν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ.
37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένην· Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
Τότε σταυροῦνται σὺν αὐτῷ δύο λῃσταί, εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων.
39Those who passed by hurled abuse at him, shaking their heads
οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν
40and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
καὶ λέγοντες· Ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν, σῶσον σεαυτόν· εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ⸀κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ.
41In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes and elders, mocked him:
ὁμοίως ⸀καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ ⸀πρεσβυτέρων ἔλεγον·
42"He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι· ⸀βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν, καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπʼ ⸀αὐτόν.
43He trusts in God; let God rescue him now, if he wants him. For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, ῥυσάσθω ⸀νῦν εἰ θέλει αὐτόν· εἶπεν γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι υἱός.
44In the same way even the rebels who were crucified with him heaped insults on him.
τὸ δʼ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες ⸀σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν.
45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης.
46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"—that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ⸀ἀνεβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων· ⸂Ἠλὶ ἠλὶ⸃ λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι; τοῦτʼ ἔστιν· Θεέ μου θεέ μου, ἱνατί με ἐγκατέλιπες;
47Some of those standing there heard it and said, "He's calling for Elijah."
τινὲς δὲ τῶν ἐκεῖ ⸀ἑστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ οὗτος.
48At once one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a staff, and offered him a drink.
καὶ εὐθέως δραμὼν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον πλήσας τε ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν.
49But the rest said, "Leave him alone. Let's see whether Elijah comes to save him."
οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ⸀ἔλεγον· Ἄφες ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας σώσων ⸀αὐτόν.
50But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.
51And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη ⸂ἀπʼ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω εἰς δύο⸃, καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐσείσθη, καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν,
52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
καὶ τὰ μνημεῖα ἀνεῴχθησαν καὶ πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ⸀ἠγέρθησαν,
53After his resurrection they came out of the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῶν μνημείων μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἐνεφανίσθησαν πολλοῖς.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
Ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετʼ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ ⸀γενόμενα ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες· Ἀληθῶς ⸂θεοῦ υἱὸς⸃ ἦν οὗτος.
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee, caring for his needs.
Ἦσαν δὲ ἐκεῖ γυναῖκες πολλαὶ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, αἵτινες ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας διακονοῦσαι αὐτῷ·
56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
ἐν αἷς ἦν Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ ⸀Ἰωσὴφ μήτηρ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου.
Marc 15,21-41
21They forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country—the father of Alexander and Rufus—to carry his cross.
Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπʼ ἀγροῦ, τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου, ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ.
22They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which means "the Place of the Skull."
καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ ⸀τὸν ⸀Γολγοθᾶν τόπον, ὅ ἐστιν ⸀μεθερμηνευόμενον Κρανίου Τόπος.
23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he would not take it.
καὶ ἐδίδουν ⸀αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον, ⸀ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν.
24And they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots to decide what each should take.
καὶ ⸂σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ⸃ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπʼ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ.
25It was the third hour when they crucified him.
Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν.
26The inscription of the charge against him read: "The King of the Jews."
καὶ ἦν ἡ ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη· Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
27With him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς, ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων ⸀αὐτοῦ.
28And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "He was counted among the lawless."
Καὶ ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ ἡ λέγουσα, Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη
29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would tear down the temple and rebuild it in three days,
Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες· Οὐὰ ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ⸂οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις⸃,
30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
σῶσον σεαυτὸν ⸀καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ.
31In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, mocked him among themselves: "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!
ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον· Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι·
32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe." Even those crucified with him taunted him.
ὁ χριστὸς ὁ ⸀βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ, ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ ⸀πιστεύσωμεν. καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι ⸀σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν.
33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
⸂Καὶ γενομένης⸃ ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης.
34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
καὶ τῇ ⸂ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ⸃ ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ ⸀μεγάλῃ· Ἐλωῒ ἐλωῒ ⸀λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι; ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Ὁ θεός μου ὁ θεός μου, εἰς τί ⸂ἐγκατέλιπές με⸃;
35When some of those standing nearby heard it, they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah."
καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον· ⸀Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ.
36Someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for him to drink, saying, "Wait—let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."
δραμὼν δέ ⸂τις καὶ⸃ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους ⸀περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν, λέγων· Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν.
37But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν.
38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπʼ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω.
39When the centurion standing there facing him saw how he died, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God."
ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ κεντυρίων ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι ⸀οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν· Ἀληθῶς ⸂οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος⸃ υἱὸς ⸂θεοῦ ἦν⸃.
40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, ἐν ⸀αἷς καὶ ⸀Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ⸀ἡ Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ ⸀Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη,
41These women had followed him and cared for his needs while he was in Galilee, and many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.
⸀αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
Luc 23,26-49
26As they led him away, they seized Simon, a man from Cyrene who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.
Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν, ἐπιλαβόμενοι ⸂Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον⸃ ἀπʼ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
27A great crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and wailing for him.
Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν ⸀αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν.
28Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep instead for yourselves and for your children.
στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ, μὴ κλαίετε ἐπʼ ἐμέ· πλὴν ἐφʼ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν,
29For look, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'
ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ ⸀αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ⸀ἔθρεψαν.
30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'
τότε ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν· Πέσετε ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς· Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς·
31For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
ὅτι εἰ ἐν ⸀τῷ ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν, ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται;
32Two others, both criminals, were also led away with him to be executed.
Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι ⸂κακοῦργοι δύο⸃ σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι.
33When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified him there along with the criminals, one on his right and the other on his left.
καὶ ὅτε ⸀ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον, ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους, ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν.
34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."[fn: Several early manuscripts do not contain this sentence.] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
⸂ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν· Πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς, οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν.⸃ διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον ⸀κλήρους.
35The people stood watching, but even the rulers sneered at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."
καὶ εἱστήκει ὁ λαὸς θεωρῶν. ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ⸀ἄρχοντες λέγοντες· Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, σωσάτω ἑαυτόν, εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστὸς ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ⸃ ἐκλεκτός.
36The soldiers also mocked him. They came up and offered him sour wine,
⸀ἐνέπαιξαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι, ⸀ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ
37saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"
καὶ λέγοντες· Εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, σῶσον σεαυτόν.
38There was also an inscription above him: "This is the King of the Jews."
ἦν δὲ καὶ ⸀ἐπιγραφὴ ἐπʼ ⸀αὐτῷ· Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ⸀οὗτος.
39One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ⸀λέγων· ⸀Οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστός; σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς.
40But the other rebuked him: "Have you no fear of God, even now that you are under the same sentence?
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ⸂ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη⸃· Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ;
41We are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."
καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως, ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν· οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν.
42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
καὶ ⸀ἔλεγεν· Ἰησοῦ, μνήσθητί ⸀μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς ⸂ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ⸃ σου.
43And Jesus said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."
καὶ εἶπεν ⸀αὐτῷ· Ἀμήν ⸂σοι λέγω⸃ σήμερον μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ.
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour,[fn: That is, from about noon until about three in the afternoon.]
⸂Καὶ ἦν⸃ ⸀ἤδη ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
45for the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
⸂τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος⸃, ἐσχίσθη ⸀δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον.
46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." And with these words he breathed his last.
καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου ⸀παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου. ⸂τοῦτο δὲ⸃ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν.
47When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, "Surely this man was righteous."
Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ⸀ἐδόξαζεν τὸν θεὸν λέγων· Ὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν.
48And all the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle, when they saw what had happened, went home beating their breasts.
καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, ⸀θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα, ⸀τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον.
49But all who knew him stood at a distance, along with the women who had followed him from Galilee, watching these things.
εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ ⸀αὐτῷ ⸀μακρόθεν, καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ ⸀συνακολουθοῦσαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα.
Jean 19,17-37
17and carrying his own cross he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
καὶ βαστάζων ⸂αὑτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν⸃ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς ⸀τὸν λεγόμενον Κρανίου Τόπον, ⸀ὃ λέγεται Ἑβραϊστὶ Γολγοθα,
18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
ὅπου αὐτὸν ἐσταύρωσαν, καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἄλλους δύο ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἐντεῦθεν, μέσον δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
19Pilate also had a notice written and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
ἔγραψεν δὲ καὶ τίτλον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ· ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον· Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
20Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
τοῦτον οὖν τὸν τίτλον πολλοὶ ἀνέγνωσαν τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν ὁ τόπος τῆς πόλεως ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς· καὶ ἦν γεγραμμένον Ἑβραϊστί, ⸂Ῥωμαϊστί, Ἑλληνιστί⸃.
21So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man said, 'I am King of the Jews.'"
ἔλεγον οὖν τῷ Πιλάτῳ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς τῶν Ἰουδαίων· Μὴ γράφε· Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἐκεῖνος εἶπεν Βασιλεὺς ⸂τῶν Ἰουδαίων εἰμί⸃.
22Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Ὃ γέγραφα γέγραφα.
23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, and also his tunic. The tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
οἱ οὖν στρατιῶται ὅτε ἐσταύρωσαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἔλαβον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐποίησαν τέσσαρα μέρη, ἑκάστῳ στρατιώτῃ μέρος, καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα. ἦν δὲ ὁ χιτὼν ἄραφος, ἐκ τῶν ἄνωθεν ὑφαντὸς διʼ ὅλου·
24So they said to one another, "Let's not tear it. Let's cast lots to see whose it will be." This happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: "They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." So that is what the soldiers did.
εἶπαν οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Μὴ σχίσωμεν αὐτόν, ἀλλὰ λάχωμεν περὶ αὐτοῦ τίνος ἔσται· ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ ⸂ἡ λέγουσα⸃· Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον. Οἱ μὲν οὖν στρατιῶται ταῦτα ἐποίησαν.
25Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ παρὰ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Κλωπᾶ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή.
26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son."
Ἰησοῦς οὖν ἰδὼν τὴν μητέρα καὶ τὸν μαθητὴν παρεστῶτα ὃν ἠγάπα λέγει τῇ ⸀μητρί· Γύναι, ⸀ἴδε ὁ υἱός σου·
27Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
εἶτα λέγει τῷ μαθητῇ· ⸀Ἴδε ἡ μήτηρ σου. καὶ ἀπʼ ἐκείνης τῆς ὥρας ἔλαβεν ὁ μαθητὴς αὐτὴν εἰς τὰ ἴδια.
28After this, knowing that everything had now been completed, and so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I thirst."
Μετὰ τοῦτο ⸀εἰδὼς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ⸂ἤδη πάντα⸃ τετέλεσται ἵνα τελειωθῇ ἡ γραφὴ λέγει· Διψῶ.
29A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it to his mouth.
⸀σκεῦος ἔκειτο ὄξους μεστόν· ⸂σπόγγον οὖν μεστὸν τοῦ⸃ ὄξους ⸀ὑσσώπῳ περιθέντες προσήνεγκαν αὐτοῦ τῷ στόματι.
30When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
ὅτε οὖν ἔλαβεν τὸ ὄξος ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Τετέλεσται, καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.
31Since it was the day of preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that Sabbath was a high day. So they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away.
Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι, ⸂ἐπεὶ παρασκευὴ ἦν, ἵνα μὴ μείνῃ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὰ σώματα ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ⸃, ἦν γὰρ μεγάλη ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνου τοῦ σαββάτου, ἠρώτησαν τὸν Πιλᾶτον ἵνα κατεαγῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰ σκέλη καὶ ἀρθῶσιν.
32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and then of the other who had been crucified with him.
ἦλθον οὖν οἱ στρατιῶται, καὶ τοῦ μὲν πρώτου κατέαξαν τὰ σκέλη καὶ τοῦ ἄλλου τοῦ συσταυρωθέντος αὐτῷ·
33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐλθόντες, ὡς εἶδον ⸂ἤδη αὐτὸν⸃ τεθνηκότα, οὐ κατέαξαν αὐτοῦ τὰ σκέλη,
34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.
ἀλλʼ εἷς τῶν στρατιωτῶν λόγχῃ αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευρὰν ἔνυξεν, καὶ ⸂ἐξῆλθεν εὐθὺς⸃ αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ.
35The one who saw it has borne witness, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, so that you also may believe.
καὶ ὁ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκεν, καὶ ἀληθινὴ ⸂αὐτοῦ ἐστιν⸃ ἡ μαρτυρία, καὶ ἐκεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει, ἵνα ⸀καὶ ὑμεῖς ⸀πιστεύητε.
36These things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken."
ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ· Ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται ⸀αὐτοῦ.
37And again another Scripture says: "They will look on the one they have pierced."
καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει· Ὄψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν.
Marc 15,21-32
21They forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country—the father of Alexander and Rufus—to carry his cross.
Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπʼ ἀγροῦ, τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου, ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ.
22They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which means "the Place of the Skull."
καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ ⸀τὸν ⸀Γολγοθᾶν τόπον, ὅ ἐστιν ⸀μεθερμηνευόμενον Κρανίου Τόπος.
23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he would not take it.
καὶ ἐδίδουν ⸀αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον, ⸀ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν.
24And they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots to decide what each should take.
καὶ ⸂σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ⸃ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπʼ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ.
25It was the third hour when they crucified him.
Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν.
26The inscription of the charge against him read: "The King of the Jews."
καὶ ἦν ἡ ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη· Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
27With him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς, ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων ⸀αὐτοῦ.
28And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "He was counted among the lawless."
Καὶ ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ ἡ λέγουσα, Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη
29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would tear down the temple and rebuild it in three days,
Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες· Οὐὰ ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ⸂οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις⸃,
30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
σῶσον σεαυτὸν ⸀καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ.
31In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, mocked him among themselves: "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!
ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον· Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι·
32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe." Even those crucified with him taunted him.
ὁ χριστὸς ὁ ⸀βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ, ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ ⸀πιστεύσωμεν. καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι ⸀σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν.
Luc 23,26-43
26As they led him away, they seized Simon, a man from Cyrene who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.
Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν, ἐπιλαβόμενοι ⸂Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον⸃ ἀπʼ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
27A great crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and wailing for him.
Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν ⸀αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν.
28Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep instead for yourselves and for your children.
στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ, μὴ κλαίετε ἐπʼ ἐμέ· πλὴν ἐφʼ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν,
29For look, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'
ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ ⸀αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ⸀ἔθρεψαν.
30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'
τότε ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν· Πέσετε ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς· Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς·
31For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
ὅτι εἰ ἐν ⸀τῷ ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν, ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται;
32Two others, both criminals, were also led away with him to be executed.
Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι ⸂κακοῦργοι δύο⸃ σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι.
33When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified him there along with the criminals, one on his right and the other on his left.
καὶ ὅτε ⸀ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον, ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους, ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν.
34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."[fn: Several early manuscripts do not contain this sentence.] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
⸂ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν· Πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς, οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν.⸃ διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον ⸀κλήρους.
35The people stood watching, but even the rulers sneered at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."
καὶ εἱστήκει ὁ λαὸς θεωρῶν. ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ⸀ἄρχοντες λέγοντες· Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, σωσάτω ἑαυτόν, εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστὸς ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ⸃ ἐκλεκτός.
36The soldiers also mocked him. They came up and offered him sour wine,
⸀ἐνέπαιξαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι, ⸀ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ
37saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"
καὶ λέγοντες· Εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, σῶσον σεαυτόν.
38There was also an inscription above him: "This is the King of the Jews."
ἦν δὲ καὶ ⸀ἐπιγραφὴ ἐπʼ ⸀αὐτῷ· Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ⸀οὗτος.
39One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ⸀λέγων· ⸀Οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστός; σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς.
40But the other rebuked him: "Have you no fear of God, even now that you are under the same sentence?
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ⸂ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη⸃· Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ;
41We are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."
καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως, ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν· οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν.
42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
καὶ ⸀ἔλεγεν· Ἰησοῦ, μνήσθητί ⸀μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς ⸂ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ⸃ σου.
43And Jesus said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."
καὶ εἶπεν ⸀αὐτῷ· Ἀμήν ⸂σοι λέγω⸃ σήμερον μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ.
Jean 19,17-27
17and carrying his own cross he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.

20Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
⸂Καὶ γενομένης⸃ ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης.
34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
καὶ τῇ ⸂ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ⸃ ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ ⸀μεγάλῃ· Ἐλωῒ ἐλωῒ ⸀λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι; ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Ὁ θεός μου ὁ θεός μου, εἰς τί ⸂ἐγκατέλιπές με⸃;
35When some of those standing nearby heard it, they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah."
καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον· ⸀Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ.
36Someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for him to drink, saying, "Wait—let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."
δραμὼν δέ ⸂τις καὶ⸃ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους ⸀περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν, λέγων· Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν.
37But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν.
38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπʼ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω.
39When the centurion standing there facing him saw how he died, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God."
ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ κεντυρίων ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι ⸀οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν· Ἀληθῶς ⸂οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος⸃ υἱὸς ⸂θεοῦ ἦν⸃.
40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, ἐν ⸀αἷς καὶ ⸀Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ⸀ἡ Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ ⸀Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη,
41These women had followed him and cared for his needs while he was in Galilee, and many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.
⸀αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
Luc 23,44-49
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour,[fn: That is, from about noon until about three in the afternoon.]
⸂Καὶ ἦν⸃ ⸀ἤδη ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
45for the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
⸂τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος⸃, ἐσχίσθη ⸀δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον.
46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." And with these words he breathed his last.
καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου ⸀παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου. ⸂τοῦτο δὲ⸃ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν.
47When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, "Surely this man was righteous."
Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ⸀ἐδόξαζεν τὸν θεὸν λέγων· Ὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν.
48And all the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle, when they saw what had happened, went home beating their breasts.
καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, ⸀θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα, ⸀τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον.
49But all who knew him stood at a distance, along with the women who had followed him from Galilee, watching these things.
εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ ⸀αὐτῷ ⸀μακρόθεν, καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ ⸀συνακολουθοῦσαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα.
Jean 19,28-37
28After this, knowing that everything had now been completed, and so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I thirst."
Μετὰ τοῦτο ⸀εἰδὼς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ⸂ἤδη πάντα⸃ τετέλεσται ἵνα τελειωθῇ ἡ γραφὴ λέγει· Διψῶ.
29A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it to his mouth.
⸀σκεῦος ἔκειτο ὄξους μεστόν· ⸂σπόγγον οὖν μεστὸν τοῦ⸃ ὄξους ⸀ὑσσώπῳ περιθέντες προσήνεγκαν αὐτοῦ τῷ στόματι.
30When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
ὅτε οὖν ἔλαβεν τὸ ὄξος ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Τετέλεσται, καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.
31Since it was the day of preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that Sabbath was a high day. So they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away.
Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι, ⸂ἐπεὶ παρασκευὴ ἦν, ἵνα μὴ μείνῃ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὰ σώματα ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ⸃, ἦν γὰρ μεγάλη ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνου τοῦ σαββάτου, ἠρώτησαν τὸν Πιλᾶτον ἵνα κατεαγῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰ σκέλη καὶ ἀρθῶσιν.
32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and then of the other who had been crucified with him.
ἦλθον οὖν οἱ στρατιῶται, καὶ τοῦ μὲν πρώτου κατέαξαν τὰ σκέλη καὶ τοῦ ἄλλου τοῦ συσταυρωθέντος αὐτῷ·
33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐλθόντες, ὡς εἶδον ⸂ἤδη αὐτὸν⸃ τεθνηκότα, οὐ κατέαξαν αὐτοῦ τὰ σκέλη,
34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.
ἀλλʼ εἷς τῶν στρατιωτῶν λόγχῃ αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευρὰν ἔνυξεν, καὶ ⸂ἐξῆλθεν εὐθὺς⸃ αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ.
35The one who saw it has borne witness, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, so that you also may believe.
καὶ ὁ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκεν, καὶ ἀληθινὴ ⸂αὐτοῦ ἐστιν⸃ ἡ μαρτυρία, καὶ ἐκεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει, ἵνα ⸀καὶ ὑμεῖς ⸀πιστεύητε.
36These things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken."
ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ· Ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται ⸀αὐτοῦ.
37And again another Scripture says: "They will look on the one they have pierced."
καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει· Ὄψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν.
Matthieu 27,32-44
32On their way out they came across a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross.
Ἐξερχόμενοι δὲ εὗρον ἄνθρωπον Κυρηναῖον ὀνόματι Σίμωνα· τοῦτον ἠγγάρευσαν ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ.
33When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means "Place of the Skull,"
Καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Γολγοθᾶ, ὅ ἐστιν ⸂Κρανίου Τόπος λεγόμενος⸃,
34they gave him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he refused to drink it.
ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πιεῖν ⸀οἶνον μετὰ χολῆς μεμιγμένον· καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκ ⸀ἠθέλησεν πιεῖν.
35When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots,
σταυρώσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον,
36and they sat down and kept watch over him there.
καὶ καθήμενοι ἐτήρουν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ.
37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένην· Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
Τότε σταυροῦνται σὺν αὐτῷ δύο λῃσταί, εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων.
39Those who passed by hurled abuse at him, shaking their heads
οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν
40and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
καὶ λέγοντες· Ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν, σῶσον σεαυτόν· εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ⸀κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ.
41In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes and elders, mocked him:
ὁμοίως ⸀καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ ⸀πρεσβυτέρων ἔλεγον·
42"He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι· ⸀βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν, καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπʼ ⸀αὐτόν.
43He trusts in God; let God rescue him now, if he wants him. For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, ῥυσάσθω ⸀νῦν εἰ θέλει αὐτόν· εἶπεν γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι υἱός.
44In the same way even the rebels who were crucified with him heaped insults on him.
τὸ δʼ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες ⸀σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν.
Matthieu 27,45-56
45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης.
46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"—that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ⸀ἀνεβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων· ⸂Ἠλὶ ἠλὶ⸃ λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι; τοῦτʼ ἔστιν· Θεέ μου θεέ μου, ἱνατί με ἐγκατέλιπες;
47Some of those standing there heard it and said, "He's calling for Elijah."
τινὲς δὲ τῶν ἐκεῖ ⸀ἑστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ οὗτος.
48At once one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a staff, and offered him a drink.
καὶ εὐθέως δραμὼν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον πλήσας τε ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν.
49But the rest said, "Leave him alone. Let's see whether Elijah comes to save him."
οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ⸀ἔλεγον· Ἄφες ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας σώσων ⸀αὐτόν.
50But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.
51And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη ⸂ἀπʼ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω εἰς δύο⸃, καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐσείσθη, καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν,
52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
καὶ τὰ μνημεῖα ἀνεῴχθησαν καὶ πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ⸀ἠγέρθησαν,
53After his resurrection they came out of the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῶν μνημείων μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἐνεφανίσθησαν πολλοῖς.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
Ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετʼ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ ⸀γενόμενα ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες· Ἀληθῶς ⸂θεοῦ υἱὸς⸃ ἦν οὗτος.
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee, caring for his needs.
Ἦσαν δὲ ἐκεῖ γυναῖκες πολλαὶ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, αἵτινες ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας διακονοῦσαι αὐτῷ·
56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
ἐν αἷς ἦν Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ ⸀Ἰωσὴφ μήτηρ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου.
