Paul in Thessalonica
Paul and Silas arrive in Thessalonica, where Paul preaches in the synagogue for three Sabbaths that Jesus is the Messiah. Some Jews, many god-fearing Greeks, and prominent women come to faith, but jealous Jews gather a mob, storm Jason's house, and drag him before the city officials with accusations of acting against the emperor. Jason and the others are released on bail.
Actes 17,1-9
1They traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
Διοδεύσαντες δὲ τὴν Ἀμφίπολιν καὶ ⸀τὴν Ἀπολλωνίαν ἦλθον εἰς Θεσσαλονίκην, ὅπου ⸀ἦν συναγωγὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
2As was his custom, Paul went in to them and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
κατὰ δὲ τὸ εἰωθὸς τῷ Παύλῳ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπὶ σάββατα τρία διελέξατο αὐτοῖς ἀπὸ τῶν γραφῶν,
3explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ."
διανοίγων καὶ παρατιθέμενος ὅτι τὸν χριστὸν ἔδει παθεῖν καὶ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκρῶν, καὶ ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ⸂ὁ χριστός, ὁ⸃ Ἰησοῦς ὃν ἐγὼ καταγγέλλω ὑμῖν.
4Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a great many devout Greeks and a number of the leading women.
καί τινες ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπείσθησαν καὶ προσεκληρώθησαν τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ τῷ Σιλᾷ, τῶν τε σεβομένων Ἑλλήνων ⸂πλῆθος πολὺ⸃ γυναικῶν τε τῶν πρώτων οὐκ ὀλίγαι.
5But the Jews grew jealous. They rounded up some scoundrels from the marketplace, formed a mob, and set the city in an uproar. They stormed Jason's house, looking to bring them out before the assembly.
⸂ζηλώσαντες δὲ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ προσλαβόμενοι⸃ τῶν ἀγοραίων ⸂ἄνδρας τινὰς⸃ πονηροὺς καὶ ὀχλοποιήσαντες ἐθορύβουν τὴν πόλιν, ⸂καὶ ἐπιστάντες⸃ τῇ οἰκίᾳ Ἰάσονος ἐζήτουν αὐτοὺς ⸀προαγαγεῖν εἰς τὸν δῆμον·
6When they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down have now come here,
μὴ εὑρόντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ⸀ἔσυρον Ἰάσονα καί τινας ἀδελφοὺς ἐπὶ τοὺς πολιτάρχας, βοῶντες ὅτι Οἱ τὴν οἰκουμένην ἀναστατώσαντες οὗτοι καὶ ἐνθάδε πάρεισιν,
7and Jason has taken them in. They are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king—Jesus."
οὓς ὑποδέδεκται Ἰάσων· καὶ οὗτοι πάντες ἀπέναντι τῶν δογμάτων Καίσαρος πράσσουσι, βασιλέα ⸂ἕτερον λέγοντες⸃ εἶναι Ἰησοῦν.
8When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into confusion.
ἐτάραξαν δὲ τὸν ὄχλον καὶ τοὺς πολιτάρχας ἀκούοντας ταῦτα,
9So they took bail from Jason and the others and released them.
καὶ λαβόντες τὸ ἱκανὸν παρὰ τοῦ Ἰάσονος καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν ἀπέλυσαν αὐτούς.
