They traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

As was his custom, Paul went in to them and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ."

Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a great many devout Greeks and a number of the leading women.

But the Jews grew jealous. They rounded up some scoundrels from the marketplace, formed a mob, and set the city in an uproar. They stormed Jason's house, looking to bring them out before the assembly.

When they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down have now come here,

and Jason has taken them in. They are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king—Jesus."

When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into confusion.

So they took bail from Jason and the others and released them.

That very night the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

These people were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica: they received the word with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see whether these things were so.

Many of them came to believe, along with a good number of prominent Greek women and not a few men.

But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was being proclaimed by Paul in Berea as well, they came there too, stirring up and inciting the crowds.

So the brothers immediately sent Paul off toward the sea, while Silas and Timothy stayed behind.

Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred to anger within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.

So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearers, and every day in the marketplace with whoever happened to be there.

Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some said, "What is this babbler trying to say?" Others said, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities"—because he was proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.

So they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching of yours is?

You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we want to know what they mean."

Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there spent their time on nothing but telling or hearing something new.

Then Paul stood up in the middle of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens, I see that in every way you are very religious.

For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: 'To an unknown god.' What you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.

The God who made the world and everything in it, the Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands,

nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything. He himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.

From one man he made every nation of humankind to inhabit the whole face of the earth, and he determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their dwelling places,

so that they would seek God and perhaps reach out for him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us.

For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'

So then, since we are God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, shaped by human skill and imagination.

God overlooked the times of ignorance that are past, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

For he has set a day on which he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead."

When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to mock, but others said, "We will hear you again about this."

At that, Paul left them.

But some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

People

Dionysius the Areopagite (Διονύσιος ὁ Ἀρεοπαγίτης) was a member of the Areopagus council in Athens, indicating high social status. Council members were usually former officials from the city’s elite. The fact that such a person came to faith shows that the gospel reached all levels of society. Damaris (Δάμαρις) is mentioned by name as a believer in Athens. Her mention alongside Dionysius the Areopagite suggests she held some social standing or significance in the early church.

Places

Thessalonica was the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia and an important trading city along the Via Egnatia, the main road between Rome and the East. The city had a substantial Jewish population with its own synagogue. Luke’s use of the title "politarchs" (πολιτάρχας) for the city’s rulers is confirmed by archaeological finds and demonstrates his accuracy, since this title was specific to Macedonian cities.

It was therefore natural that Paul was brought there to explain his "new teaching".

The accusation in Thessalonica had political explosive power: proclaiming "another king than Caesar" (βασιλέα ἕτερον... Ἰησοῦν) was potentially high treason (maiestas). Under Emperor Claudius (41–54 AD), there was particular sensitivity regarding Jewish disturbances – Claudius had expelled Jews from Rome around the year 49. The bail (τὸ ἱκανὸν) that Jason had to pay was a financial guarantee that his guests would not cause further trouble.

The debate culture in Athens was legendary. Luke’s remark that Athenians and visitors "spent their time doing nothing but telling or hearing something new" (v. 21) matches contemporary descriptions. Demosthenes had criticized the same thing centuries earlier, and Roman authors like Cicero confirmed this characterization.

Key Terms

Spermologos (σπερμολόγος) – literally "seed-picker" – was a derogatory Athenian slang term. Originally it described birds picking up seeds; figuratively it meant a person who gathered and scattered random fragments of ideas without real understanding. The Epicureans and Stoics regarded Paul as such an intellectual amateur.

"Strange gods" (ξένων δαιμονίων) – the Athenians thought Paul was preaching new deities. Interestingly, this was the same accusation that had been brought against Socrates in 399 BC. Some scholars suggest the listeners misunderstood "Jesus" (Ἰησοῦς) and "Anastasis" (ἀνάστασις/resurrection) as the names of a divine pair – a male and a female deity.

Deisidaimonesterous (δεισιδαιμονεστέρους) in verse 22 can mean both "very religious" (positive) and "superstitious" (negative). Paul likely used the word with diplomatic ambiguity to win goodwill from his audience.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Several inscriptions bearing the title "politarch" have been found in the Thessalonica area, including a famous inscription from the Vardar Gate (now in the British Museum) that mentions this title. This confirms Luke’s accuracy, since "politarch" was an unusual title that hardly appears in other ancient literature.

Altars to unknown gods are attested by several ancient authors. Pausanias (1st–2nd century AD) describes altars "to unknown gods" along the road from the port of Phaleron to Athens. Diogenes Laertius reports that Epimenides of Crete recommended erecting such altars to ward off a plague in Athens. The philosopher Apollonius of Tyana is also said to have seen them.

The quotation in verse 28 – "For we are also his offspring" – comes from the Stoic poet Aratus of Soli (ca. 315–240 BC) in his astronomical poem Phaenomena. A similar formulation is found in Cleanthes’ Hymn to Zeus. By quoting Greek poets, Paul demonstrated familiarity with his audience’s own tradition and built a bridge between Greek philosophy and biblical creation theology.
