Abda

Father of Adoniram, overseer of the forced laborers under Solomon

Le royaume uniFather of an officialc. 1000 BC

Abda is known from the Old Testament as the father of Adoniram, the official who had supervision over the forced laborers during King Solomon's reign. The name Abda is an Aramaized form of the Hebrew word for 'servant', and can be understood as a short form of a theophoric name meaning 'God's servant'. Although Abda is primarily known through his son, his place in the biblical text indicates that the family held a prominent role in the administration of the united kingdom under Solomon.

Abda's son Adoniram as Solomon's official

Abda is mentioned as the father of Adoniram, who was responsible for the forced laborers during King Solomon's rule. This shows that Abda's family held an important position in Israel's administration.

Adoram's service under David

In 2 Samuel 20:24, an Adoram is mentioned as the overseer of the forced laborers under King David. Several scholars identify this Adoram with Adoniram son of Abda, but the identification is uncertain. If it is the same person, his career spanned the reigns of two kings.

24Adoram was in charge of forced labor; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the record keeper;

Adoram's tragic death

An official named Adoram – possibly identical to Adoniram son of Abda, or a successor in the same office – was stoned to death by the people of Israel when King Rehoboam sent him to collect forced labor. The event marked the final division of the kingdom.

18Then King Rehoboam sent out Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
