Settlement in Jerusalem

Ataja was among the prominent men from the tribe of Judah who settled in Jerusalem after returning from exile. This was part of an organized effort to repopulate the city, where leaders settled in the city and others were chosen by lot.

1The leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine remained in the towns.
2And the people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.

Possible parallel in Chronicles

In 1 Chronicles there is a similar list of those who lived in Jerusalem, with representatives from the sons of Perez in the tribe of Judah. The relationship between this list and Nehemiah 11 is debated among scholars, and it is unclear whether it refers to the same person or a parallel tradition.
