Son of Encouragement
Barnabas, originally Joseph from Cyprus, was given the name 'son of encouragement' by the apostles. He was a Levite who sold his field and gave the money to the community. He introduced the newly converted Paul to the skeptical apostles and became his companion on the first missionary journey.

⸀Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ὁ ἐπικληθεὶς Βαρναβᾶς ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων, ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον υἱὸς παρακλήσεως, Λευίτης, Κύπριος τῷ γένει,
37sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
ὑπάρχοντος αὐτῷ ἀγροῦ πωλήσας ἤνεγκεν τὸ χρῆμα καὶ ἔθηκεν ⸀παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τῶν ἀποστόλων.
Defense of Paul
When the church feared the newly converted Paul, Barnabas took him to the apostles and vouched for his conversion.
26When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.
Παραγενόμενος δὲ ⸀εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ⸀ἐπείραζεν κολλᾶσθαι τοῖς μαθηταῖς· καὶ πάντες ἐφοβοῦντο αὐτόν, μὴ πιστεύοντες ὅτι ἐστὶν μαθητής.
27But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road, that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.
Βαρναβᾶς δὲ ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἤγαγεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους, καὶ διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶδεν τὸν κύριον καὶ ὅτι ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ καὶ πῶς ἐν Δαμασκῷ ἐπαρρησιάσατο ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι ⸀τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
28So he went in and out among them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.
καὶ ἦν μετʼ αὐτῶν εἰσπορευόμενος ⸂καὶ ἐκπορευόμενος⸃ εἰς ⸀Ἰερουσαλήμ, παρρησιαζόμενος ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ ⸀κυρίου,
Ministry in Antioch
Barnabas was sent to Antioch and brought Paul from Tarsus to help. It was here that the disciples were first called Christians.
22News of them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas off to Antioch.
ἠκούσθη δὲ ὁ λόγος εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῆς ἐκκλησίας τῆς ⸀οὔσης ἐν ⸀Ἰερουσαλὴμ περὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν ⸀Βαρναβᾶν ἕως Ἀντιοχείας·
23When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced, and he encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast hearts,
ὃς παραγενόμενος καὶ ἰδὼν τὴν χάριν ⸀τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ, ἐχάρη καὶ παρεκάλει πάντας τῇ προθέσει τῆς καρδίας ⸀προσμένειν τῷ κυρίῳ,
25Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
ἐξῆλθεν δὲ εἰς ⸀Ταρσὸν ἀναζητῆσαι Σαῦλον,
26and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.
καὶ εὑρὼν ⸀ἤγαγεν εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν. ἐγένετο δὲ ⸂αὐτοῖς καὶ⸃ ἐνιαυτὸν ὅλον συναχθῆναι ⸀ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ καὶ διδάξαι ὄχλον ἱκανόν, χρηματίσαι τε ⸀πρώτως ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ τοὺς μαθητὰς Χριστιανούς.
The First Missionary Journey
Barnabas and Paulus were sent out by the Holy Spirit from Antioch on their first major missionary journey.
2While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
λειτουργούντων δὲ αὐτῶν τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ νηστευόντων εἶπεν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον· Ἀφορίσατε δή μοι τὸν Βαρναβᾶν ⸀καὶ Σαῦλον εἰς τὸ ἔργον ὃ προσκέκλημαι αὐτούς.
3So after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
τότε νηστεύσαντες καὶ προσευξάμενοι καὶ ἐπιθέντες τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς ἀπέλυσαν.
4Sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus.
⸀Αὐτοὶ μὲν οὖν ἐκπεμφθέντες ὑπὸ τοῦ ⸂ἁγίου πνεύματος⸃ κατῆλθον ⸀εἰς Σελεύκειαν, ἐκεῖθέν ⸀τε ἀπέπλευσαν ⸁εἰς Κύπρον,
The Dispute over John Mark
Barnabas and Paulus parted ways because Barnabas wanted to take John Mark with them, who had left them earlier.
36Some days later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing."
Μετὰ δέ τινας ἡμέρας εἶπεν ⸂πρὸς Βαρναβᾶν Παῦλος⸃· Ἐπιστρέψαντες δὴ ἐπισκεψώμεθα τοὺς ⸀ἀδελφοὺς κατὰ ⸂πόλιν πᾶσαν⸃ ἐν αἷς κατηγγείλαμεν τὸν λόγον τοῦ κυρίου, πῶς ἔχουσιν.
37Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, along with them,
Βαρναβᾶς δὲ ⸀ἐβούλετο συμπαραλαβεῖν ⸀καὶ τὸν Ἰωάννην τὸν καλούμενον Μᾶρκον·
38but Paul insisted that they should not take along someone who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone on with them to the work.
Παῦλος δὲ ἠξίου, τὸν ἀποστάντα ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Παμφυλίας καὶ μὴ συνελθόντα αὐτοῖς εἰς τὸ ἔργον, μὴ ⸀συμπαραλαμβάνειν τοῦτον.
39The disagreement was so sharp that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus,
ἐγένετο ⸀δὲ παροξυσμὸς ὥστε ἀποχωρισθῆναι αὐτοὺς ἀπʼ ἀλλήλων, τόν τε Βαρναβᾶν παραλαβόντα τὸν Μᾶρκον ἐκπλεῦσαι εἰς Κύπρον,
40while Paul chose Silas and set out, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.
Παῦλος δὲ ἐπιλεξάμενος Σιλᾶν ἐξῆλθεν παραδοθεὶς τῇ χάριτι τοῦ ⸀κυρίου ὑπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν,
