Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest

and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found anyone belonging to the Way, men or women, he could bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.

As he traveled and was approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.

He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"

"Who are you, Lord?" he asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied.

"Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

The men traveling with him stood speechless; they heard the voice but saw no one.

Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open he could see nothing. So they took him by the hand and led him into Damascus.

For three days he was without sight, and he neither ate nor drank.

In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias!" "Here I am, Lord," he answered.

The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and ask at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying,

and in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he may see again."

But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many people about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.

And here he has authority from the chief priests to arrest everyone who calls on your name."

But the Lord said to him, "Go, for this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.

I myself will show him how much he must suffer for my name."

So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,

and after taking some food he regained his strength. He stayed some days with the disciples in Damascus,

and at once he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues: "He is the Son of God."

All who heard him were astounded and said, "Isn't this the man who wreaked havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn't he come here to bring them in chains to the chief priests?"

But Saul grew all the stronger and confounded the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.

After many days had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him,

but Saul learned of their plot. They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him,

so his disciples took him by night and lowered him in a basket through the wall.

When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.

But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road, that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.

So he went in and out among them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.

He talked and debated with the Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to kill him.

When the brothers found out, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

So the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it continued to grow.

As Peter traveled about the country, he also came down to the saints living in Lydda.

There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, paralyzed.

Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed." And immediately he got up.

All who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha, which translated means Dorcas. She was always doing good works and giving to those in need.

About that time she fell sick and died. They washed her body and laid her in an upstairs room.

Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples heard that Peter was there and sent two men to him with the plea, "Please come to us at once!"

So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room, and all the widows stood around him weeping and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them.

Peter sent them all out of the room, knelt down, and prayed. Then he turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.

He gave her his hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the saints and the widows and presented her to them alive.

This became known all over Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

Peter stayed on in Joppa for many days with a tanner named Simon.

People

Saul/Paul of Tarsus (Σαῦλος, Ταρσέα, v. 11) is introduced here as a persecutor of Christians and undergoes his dramatic conversion. He was a Pharisee with Roman citizenship from Tarsus, a significant city in Cilicia.

Ananias in Damascus (Ἁνανίας, v. 10) was a Jewish disciple (μαθητής) whom the Lord spoke to in a vision and sent to heal and baptize Saul. His presence testifies that a Christian community already existed in Damascus, likely established by Jews who had heard the gospel in Jerusalem.

Judas in Damascus (Ἰούδα, v. 11) was the homeowner on Straight Street where Saul stayed after his experience on the road to Damascus.

Barnabas (Βαρναβᾶς, v. 27) was a Levite from Cyprus (see Acts 4:36) who introduced the newly converted Saul to the apostles in Jerusalem when other disciples feared him. His role as a bridge-builder was crucial for Saul's acceptance within the church.

Aeneas (Αἰνέας, v. 33-34) was a man in Lydda who had been bedridden and paralyzed for eight years. Peter healed him in the name of Jesus Christ.

Damascus was one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with a large Jewish population organized into several synagogues. The city lay about 240 km northeast of Jerusalem and at this time was under Nabatean influence, as seen from the fact that King Aretas' governor guarded the city (2 Cor 11:32). "The Straight Street" (ῥύμην τὴν καλουμένην Εὐθεῖαν, v. 11) was the city's main street running east-west through the center – a typical Hellenistic urban plan. The street still exists in Damascus today.

Lydda (Λύδδα, v. 32, modern Lod) lay about 40 km northwest of Jerusalem on the coastal plain, at an important crossroads. The city had a significant Jewish population and served as an administrative center. The Plain of Sharon (Σαρῶνα, v. 35) mentioned was the fertile coastal area between Joppa and Caesarea.

Joppa (Ἰόππῃ, v. 36, modern Jaffa/Tel Aviv) was Judea's most important port city with a long history dating back to Egyptian times. The city had a mixed population of Jews and Gentiles.

Caesarea (Καισάρειαν, v. 30) was the Roman capital of the province of Judea, featuring a large harbor built by Herod the Great. Saul was sent there by the brothers before he continued on to Tarsus.

Events and Customs

The high priest's jurisdiction over Diaspora Jews (vv. 1-2) reflects the authority the Sanhedrin held over Jewish communities outside Judea. Introductory letters to synagogues granted the right to arrest and extradite suspects to Jerusalem for trial. This practice was recognized by Roman authorities as part of Jewish religious self-governance.

Escape in a basket through the city wall (v. 25) was a known escape method in ancient cities. Houses were often built into the city walls with windows facing outward. Damascus' massive walls had such dwellings. Paul himself mentions this event in 2 Cor 11:32-33, where he specifies that it was King Aretas' governor who guarded the city – a detail that helps date the period to 37-40 AD.

Washing and placing the dead in an upper room (v. 37) followed Jewish burial customs. The body was washed, anointed, and placed in the home's upper floor before burial, which normally occurred on the same day. That Tabitha's body was preserved longer suggests that the community held hope for intervention.
