29 Laban also gave his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her slave girl. héb וַיִּתֵּ֤ן לָבָן֙ לְרָחֵ֣ל בִּתּ֔וֹ אֶת־בִּלְהָ֖ה שִׁפְחָת֑וֹ לָ֖הּ לְשִׁפְחָֽה׃
When Rachel could not bear children, she gave Bilhah to Jacob as a concubine so that she might have children through her, in accordance with the customs of that time.
3 Then she said, "Here is my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, so that she may give birth on my knees and I too may be built up through her." héb וַתֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֛ה אֲמָתִ֥י בִלְהָ֖ה בֹּ֣א אֵלֶ֑יהָ וְתֵלֵד֙ עַל־בִּרְכַּ֔י וְאִבָּנֶ֥ה גַם־אָנֹכִ֖י מִמֶּֽנָּה׃
4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob slept with her. héb וַתִּתֶּן־ל֛וֹ אֶת־בִּלְהָ֥ה שִׁפְחָתָ֖הּ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ יַעֲקֹֽב׃
Bilhah bore her first son Dan, and Rachel said that God had judged in her favor and given her a son.
5 Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. héb וַתַּ֣הַר בִּלְהָ֔ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב בֵּֽן׃
6 Then Rachel said, "God has judged in my favor; he has heard my voice and given me a son." So she named him Dan. héb וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רָחֵל֙ דָּנַ֣נִּי אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְגַם֙ שָׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלִ֔י וַיִּתֶּן־לִ֖י בֵּ֑ן עַל־כֵּ֛ן קָרְאָ֥ה שְׁמ֖וֹ דָּֽן׃
Bilhah bore her second son Naphtali, and Rachel said that she had struggled with her sister and prevailed.
7 Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. héb וַתַּ֣הַר ע֔וֹד וַתֵּ֕לֶד בִּלְהָ֖ה שִׁפְחַ֣ת רָחֵ֑ל בֵּ֥ן שֵׁנִ֖י לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃
8 Then Rachel said, "With a mighty struggle I have wrestled with my sister, and I have won." So she named him Naphtali. héb וַתֹּ֣אמֶר רָחֵ֗ל נַפְתּוּלֵ֨י אֱלֹהִ֧ים ׀ נִפְתַּ֛לְתִּי עִם־אֲחֹתִ֖י גַּם־יָכֹ֑לְתִּי וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ נַפְתָּלִֽי׃
Reuben, Jacob's firstborn son, slept with Bilhah, which became known to Jacob and later cost Reuben his birthright.
22 While Israel was living in that land, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel heard of it. Jacob had twelve sons: héb וַיְהִ֗י בִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֔֗ן וַיִּשְׁכַּ֕ב֙ אֶת־בִּלְהָ֖ה֙ פִּילֶ֣גֶשׁ אָבִ֑֔יו וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑͏ֽל פ וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֖ב שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָֽׂר׃
