Reuben was Jacob's firstborn son with Leah and the ancestor of one of Israel's twelve tribes. He tried to save Joseph from his brothers' murder plans, but lost his birthright due to sin against his father. His tribe settled east of the Jordan.

Born as the Firstborn
Reuben was born as Jacob's first son with Leah. His name means 'see, a son', for Leah hoped that Jacob would now love her.
32Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Reuben, for she said, "The LORD has seen my misery. Surely now my husband will love me."
וַתַּ֤הַר לֵאָה֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ רְאוּבֵ֑ן כִּ֣י אָֽמְרָ֗ה כִּֽי־רָאָ֤ה יְהוָה֙ בְּעָנְיִ֔י כִּ֥י עַתָּ֖ה יֶאֱהָבַ֥נִי אִישִֽׁי׃
Found Duda'im for His Mother
As a boy Reuben found duda'im (mandrakes) in the field and brought them to his mother Leah, which led to an agreement between Leah and Rachel.
14During the wheat harvest Reuben went out and found mandrakes in the field, and he brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes."
וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֜ן בִּימֵ֣י קְצִיר־חִטִּ֗ים וַיִּמְצָ֤א דֽוּדָאִים֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַיָּבֵ֣א אֹתָ֔ם אֶל־לֵאָ֖ה אִמּ֑וֹ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רָחֵל֙ אֶל־לֵאָ֔ה תְּנִי־נָ֣א לִ֔י מִדּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנֵֽךְ׃
15But she answered her, "Is it a small thing that you took my husband? Will you take my son's mandrakes as well?" "Very well," Rachel said, "he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son's mandrakes."
וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לָ֗הּ הַמְעַט֙ קַחְתֵּ֣ךְ אֶת־אִישִׁ֔י וְלָקַ֕חַת גַּ֥ם אֶת־דּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנִ֑י וַתֹּ֣אמֶר רָחֵ֗ל לָכֵן֙ יִשְׁכַּ֤ב עִמָּךְ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה תַּ֖חַת דּוּדָאֵ֥י בְנֵֽךְ׃
16When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must come to me, for I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." So he slept with her that night.
וַיָּבֹ֨א יַעֲקֹ֣ב מִן־הַשָּׂדֶה֮ בָּעֶרֶב֒ וַתֵּצֵ֨א לֵאָ֜ה לִקְרָאת֗וֹ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֵלַ֣י תָּב֔וֹא כִּ֚י שָׂכֹ֣ר שְׂכַרְתִּ֔יךָ בְּדוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנִ֑י וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב עִמָּ֖הּ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הֽוּא׃
Sinned with Bilhah
Reuben slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine, which was a serious sin that caused him to lose his birthright.
22While Israel was living in that land, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel heard of it. Jacob had twelve sons:
וַיְהִ֗י בִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֔֗ן וַיִּשְׁכַּ֕ב֙ אֶת־בִּלְהָ֖ה֙ פִּילֶ֣גֶשׁ אָבִ֑֔יו וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑͏ֽל פ וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֖ב שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָֽׂר׃
Attempted to save Joseph
When the brothers wanted to kill Joseph, Reuben convinced them to throw him into a pit instead, planning to rescue him later.
21When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. "Let's not take his life," he said.
וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע רְאוּבֵ֔ן וַיַּצִּלֵ֖הוּ מִיָּדָ֑ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א נַכֶּ֖נּוּ נָֽפֶשׁ׃
22Reuben said to them, "Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don't lay a hand on him." He said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֣ם ׀ רְאוּבֵן֮ אַל־תִּשְׁפְּכוּ־דָם֒ הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ אֹת֗וֹ אֶל־הַבּ֤וֹר הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְיָ֖ד אַל־תִּשְׁלְחוּ־ב֑וֹ לְמַ֗עַן הַצִּ֤יל אֹתוֹ֙ מִיָּדָ֔ם לַהֲשִׁיב֖וֹ אֶל־אָבִֽיו׃
29When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.
וַיָּ֤שָׁב רְאוּבֵן֙ אֶל־הַבּ֔וֹר וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵין־יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּבּ֑וֹר וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־בְּגָדָֽיו׃
30He went back to his brothers and said, "The boy is gone! And I—where can I turn now?"
וַיָּ֥שָׁב אֶל־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַיֶּ֣לֶד אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וַאֲנִ֖י אָ֥נָה אֲנִי־בָֽא׃
Offered his sons as security
Reuben offered the lives of his two sons as security for Benjamin when the family needed to travel to Egypt for grain.
37Then Reuben said to his father, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will return him to you."
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר רְאוּבֵן֙ אֶל־אָבִ֣יו לֵאמֹ֔ר אֶת־שְׁנֵ֤י בָנַי֙ תָּמִ֔ית אִם־לֹ֥א אֲבִיאֶ֖נּוּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ תְּנָ֤ה אֹתוֹ֙ עַל־יָדִ֔י וַאֲנִ֖י אֲשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ אֵלֶֽיךָ׃
Jacob's prophecy about Reuben
On his deathbed, Jacob prophesied that Reuben, though he was the firstborn, would not have preeminence because he had defiled his father's bed.
3Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first fruit of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power.
רְאוּבֵן֙ בְּכֹ֣רִי אַ֔תָּה כֹּחִ֖י וְרֵאשִׁ֣ית אוֹנִ֑י יֶ֥תֶר שְׂאֵ֖ת וְיֶ֥תֶר עָֽז׃
4Unruly as water, you will excel no longer, for you climbed onto your father's bed, onto my couch, and defiled it.
פַּ֤חַז כַּמַּ֙יִם֙ אַל־תּוֹתַ֔ר כִּ֥י עָלִ֖יתָ מִשְׁכְּבֵ֣י אָבִ֑יךָ אָ֥ז חִלַּ֖לְתָּ יְצוּעִ֥י עָלָֽה׃ פ
