18 John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." grec ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ ὅτι Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου.
John the Baptist publicly criticized the illegal marriage and told Herod that it was not lawful for him to have his brother's wife.
3 For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, grec Ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάννην ἔδησεν ⸀αὐτὸν καὶ ⸂ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο⸃ διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ,
4 since John had been telling him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." grec ἔλεγεν γὰρ ⸂αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰωάννης⸃· Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν·
Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but Herodes protected the prophet because he feared the people and knew that John was a righteous man.
19 So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not, grec ἡ δὲ Ἡρῳδιὰς ἐνεῖχεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἤθελεν αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο·
20 because Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he listened to him he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to hear him. grec ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ἐφοβεῖτο τὸν Ἰωάννην, εἰδὼς αὐτὸν ἄνδρα δίκαιον καὶ ἅγιον, καὶ συνετήρει αὐτόν, καὶ ἀκούσας αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ⸀ἠπόρει, καὶ ἡδέως αὐτοῦ ἤκουεν.
When Salome danced for Herodes on his birthday and received a promise, Herodias instructed her daughter to ask for John's head on a platter.
6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests and pleased Herod so much grec ⸂γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις⸃ τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ,
7 that he swore an oath to give her whatever she asked. grec ὅθεν μετὰ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ⸀ἐὰν αἰτήσηται.
8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter." grec ἡ δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς· Δός μοι, φησίν, ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ.
Herodes, bound by his oath before the guests, ordered that John be beheaded in prison. The head was brought to Salome, who gave it to her mother.
27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went and beheaded him in the prison, grec καὶ ⸀εὐθὺς ἀποστείλας ὁ βασιλεὺς σπεκουλάτορα ἐπέταξεν ⸀ἐνέγκαι τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ. ⸀καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπεκεφάλισεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. grec καὶ ἤνεγκεν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ τὸ κοράσιον ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
