Izhar was a son of Kohath, grandson of Levi, and thus an important figure in the lineage of the Levites. He was the father of Korah, Nepheg, and Zicri, and his descendants, the Izharites, had specific duties related to the tabernacle service. Through his son Korah, he is also known in connection with Korah's rebellion against Moses and Aaron.
During King David's reign, the Izharites, descendants of Izhar, were assigned specific administrative and spiritual tasks, including serving as officials and judges.
Korah's Rebellion – Consequence for Izhar's Lineage
Izhar's son Korah led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, resulting in the earth opening up and swallowing the rebels. This is one of the most dramatic events associated with Izhar's descendants.
1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took action, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben.
2They rose up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty men of Israel, leaders of the community, appointed members of the assembly, men of reputation.
3They gathered against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?"
