The Arrest of Jesus in Gethsemane

Malchus was among those who came to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was a servant of the high priest and participated in the armed group led by Judas Iscariot.

3So Judas came there with a detachment of soldiers and with officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, and with him a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
48The betrayer had given them a sign: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."
49He went straight up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.
50Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you came for." Then they came forward, laid hands on Jesus, and arrested him.

Peter Cuts Off Malchus' Ear

Simon Peter drew his sword and cut off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's servant, in an attempt to defend Jesus against the arrest.

10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
51Suddenly one of those with Jesus reached out, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
47But one of those standing nearby drew his sword and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
50And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.

Jesus Heals Malchus' Ear

Jesus rebuked Peter, touched Malchus' ear, and healed him. This was Jesus' last healing miracle before the crucifixion and demonstrated his mercy even toward his enemies.

51But Jesus answered, "Stop! No more of this." And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.

Jesus Rebukes Violence

Jesus commanded Peter to put the sword back in its sheath and declared that all who draw the sword will die by the sword. He pointed out that he could have asked his Father for more than twelve legions of angels.

52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.
53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he would at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ ⸀δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι ⸂ἄρτι πλείω⸃ δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων;
54But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen this way?"
πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι;
11So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back in its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"
εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ· Βάλε τὴν ⸀μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέν μοι ὁ πατὴρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;

Malchus' relative recognizes Peter

Later, while Peter was in the high priest's courtyard denying Jesus, he was recognized by a relative of Malchus who had seen him in the garden. This contributed to Peter's third denial of Jesus.

26One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"
λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, συγγενὴς ὢν οὗ ἀπέκοψεν Πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον· Οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μετʼ αὐτοῦ;
27Again Peter denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.
