Othniel (Caleb's nephew, Achsah's husband)

Israel's first judge

Les jugesJudgeWarriorLeaderc. 1400–1300 BC

Othniel was the first judge in Israel after Joshua's death. He was the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, and won Achsah's hand by capturing the city of Kiriath-sepher. God raised him up to deliver Israel from Cushan-rishathaim's oppression, and the land had peace for forty years under his leadership.

The Capture of Kiriath-sepher

Othniel captured the city of Kiriath-sepher (also called Debir) and thereby won Achsah, Caleb's daughter, as his wife as a reward for his bravery.

15From there he went up against the inhabitants of Debir, formerly called Kiriath Sepher.
16And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher."
17Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's brother, captured it, so Caleb gave him his daughter Aksah in marriage.

Achsah's Dowry

When Achsah came to Othniel, she persuaded her father Caleb to give her springs of water in addition to the land of the Negev as her dowry.

18When she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. She got down from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What can I do for you?"
19She answered, "Grant me a favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well." So he gave her the upper and lower springs.

Called to Be Judge

When Israel had sinned and been oppressed by Cushan-rishathaim from Mesopotamia for eight years, they cried out to the Lord, and he raised up Othniel as their deliverer.

9Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up a deliverer for them, who saved them: Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.

The Spirit of the Lord upon Othniel

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Othniel, and he became judge in Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim into his hand.

Forty Years of Peace

After Othniel's victory, the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel died. This marked the first period of rest during the time of the judges.

11So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.
