Japheth's youngest son

Les patriarchesPatriarch?

Tiras was the youngest son of Japheth, who was one of Noah's three sons. He is mentioned in Genesis and 1 Chronicles as part of the genealogical record after the flood. Tiras is traditionally regarded as the ancestor of the Thracians or Tyrrhenians (Etruscans), peoples who settled in the regions around the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean.

Mentioned in the genealogy after the flood

Tiras is mentioned as the seventh and youngest son of Japheth in the genealogy in Genesis chapter 10, known as "The Table of Nations".

2The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

Japheth's sons introduced

After the flood, Japheth's sons, including Tiras, became ancestors to the nations that spread across the earth.

1This is the family line of Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.

5From these the coastland peoples spread out into their lands, each with its own language, by their clans within their nations.

Repeated in Chronicles

Tiras is mentioned again in 1 Chronicles as part of the genealogy from Adam through Noah's sons, confirming his place in Israel's historical memory.

The scattering of the nations

Tiras and his brothers' descendants spread to their respective territories, each people with its own language and clans, in line with God's plan to fill the earth.

5From these the coastland peoples spread out into their lands, each with its own language, by their clans within their nations.

God's blessing on Noah's descendants

Tiras was part of the generation that received God's command to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth after the flood.

1Then God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.
7As for you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out over the earth and increase upon it."
19These three were Noah's sons, and from them the whole earth was populated.
