This is the family line of Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.

The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim, and the Dodanim.

From these the coastland peoples spread out into their lands, each with its own language, by their clans within their nations.

The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan.

The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

Cush fathered Nimrod, who was the first to become a mighty man on the earth.

He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD."

The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah,

and Resen, between Nineveh and Calah — that is the great city.

Egypt fathered the Ludim, the Anamim, the Lehabim, the Naphtuhim,

the Pathrusim, the Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and the Caphtorim.

Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,

and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,

the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,

the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Later the clans of the Canaanites scattered,

and the territory of the Canaanites reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

These are the sons of Ham, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.

Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth; he was the father of all the sons of Eber.

The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.

The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.

Arpachshad fathered Shelah, and Shelah fathered Eber.

Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided; his brother's name was Joktan.

Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,

Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,

Obal, Abimael, Sheba,

Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

Their settlements stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, the hill country of the east.

These are the sons of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.

These are the clans of Noah's sons, according to their family lines, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.

People

Nimrod (vv. 8–12) is the only person in the chapter described with individual characteristics beyond his lineage. He is called גִּבֹּר (gibbor) – "a mighty man" or "hero" – and is linked to the founding of several Mesopotamian cities. The name has an uncertain etymology but may relate to the Hebrew verb "to rebel" (marad). In later Jewish tradition, he was often portrayed negatively as a tyrant and rebel against God, although the biblical text does not explicitly condemn him. Assyrian kings used the title "mighty hunter" for themselves, which may reflect the cultural background of Nimrod's description.

Eber (vv. 21, 24–25) is especially highlighted by Shem being called "the father of all the children of Eber." The name עֵבֶר is linguistically related to the term "Hebrew" (עִבְרִי), and this lineage points forward to Abraham and the Israelites. The name may mean "one from beyond" and reflects a people who crossed a boundary or river.

Places

The chapter mentions numerous cities and regions that all have known historical and archaeological foundations. Babel (Babylon), Erek (Uruk), Akkad, and Calneh in the land of Shinar (Sumer/Babylonia) represent the oldest known urban civilizations in the world. Uruk was one of the first major cities in the world (c. 3500 BCE) and is well documented through excavations.

Nineveh (vv. 11–12) later became the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and has been thoroughly excavated. The city lay on the Tigris River in what is now northern Iraq. Calah (Nimrud) was another Assyrian capital, known for its monumental palaces. Rehoboth-Ir and Resen are more difficult to identify but may refer to suburbs or districts within the greater Nineveh complex.

The Canaanite boundaries (v. 19) describe an area from Sidon in the north to Gaza and Gerar in the southwest, extending eastward to Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Lasha – cities by the Dead Sea. This boundary description corresponds with the later Israelite concept of the extent of Canaan.

Egyptian texts from the New Kingdom contain similar lists of peoples, and Mesopotamian kings kept records of subjugated nations. The biblical list stands out by presenting all peoples as equally descended from one family, without hierarchical ranking based on imperial interests.

The threefold division according to Noah's three sons – Japheth, Ham, and Shem – follows a geographical pattern where Japheth represents peoples in the north and west (Anatolia, Greece, coastal regions), Ham represents peoples in the south (Africa, Canaan, Arabia), and Shem represents peoples in the east (Mesopotamia, Elam, Aramean areas). Chapter-Specific Findings

The Assyrian king list and other Mesopotamian sources confirm the existence of several cities mentioned in the chapter. Excavations at Nimrud (Calah) from 1845 onward uncovered palaces with reliefs depicting royal hunting – an activity that resonates with the description of Nimrod as a "mighty hunter." Assyrian kings portrayed themselves as powerful hunters who defeated lions and other wild beasts, which was a symbol of royal power and divine favor.

Archaeological discoveries in Uruk have revealed some of the earliest examples of writing (cuneiform) from around 3300 BCE, confirming the city's significance as an early center of civilization. The Mari texts from c. 1800 BCE mention several of the ethnic groups and places in the chapter, including references to people from Javan (Javan/Greeks) and various Semitic tribes.
