The Man Who Touched the Ark of the Covenant

Aussi appelé : Uzza, Uzzah

Le royaume uniLeaderc. 1000 BC

Uzzah was a son of Abinadab who helped transport the ark of the covenant from his father's house to Jerusalem during King David's reign. He was struck down by God when he reached out his hand and touched the ark to steady it after the oxen stumbled. His sudden death served as a solemn reminder of the holiness of God's things and the importance of following God's instructions.

The Ark Kept in Abinadab's House

The ark of the covenant had been kept in Abinadab's house at Kiriath-Jearim for many years after it was returned by the Philistines. Uzzah and his brother Ahio grew up near the ark.

1So the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD and brought it to the house of Abinadab on the hill, and they consecrated his son Eleazar to keep watch over the ark of the LORD.
2From the day the ark came to rest at Kiriath-jearim a long time passed—twenty years—and the whole house of Israel lamented and longed after the LORD.

Transporting the Ark on a New Cart

King David decided to move the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, and Uzzah and Ahio drove the new cart on which the ark was placed. This went against God's command that the ark should be carried by the Levites.

3They set the ark of God on a new cart and carried it from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart,
4bringing it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on the hill, and Ahio walked ahead of the ark.

Uzzah Touches the Ark

When they reached the threshing floor of Kidon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and grabbed hold of God's ark to prevent it from falling.

6When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out to the ark of God and took hold of it, because the oxen had stumbled.

God's Wrath and Uzzah's Death

The Lord was angry with Uzzah because of his irreverent act, and God struck him down there by the ark. Uzzah died on the spot beside the ark of God.

7The anger of the LORD blazed against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence, and he died there beside the ark of God.
9When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen had stumbled.
10Then the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.

David Becomes Afraid and Angry

That day David was both angry and afraid of the Lord. He named the place Perez-Uzzah, which means 'Uzzah's breach,' and he did not dare to move the ark further to the City of David.

8David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah, so he named that place Perez-uzzah, and it is called so to this day.
9David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, "How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?"
10So David was unwilling to bring the ark of the LORD up to himself in the City of David; instead he turned it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
11David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah, so he named that place Perez Uzzah, and it is called that to this day.
12David was afraid of God that day, and he said, "How can I ever bring the ark of God home to me?"

The Ark Is Placed with Obed-Edom

After Uzzah's death, the ark was instead placed in the house of Obed-Edom from Gath, where it remained for three months. The Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household while the ark was there.

10So David was unwilling to bring the ark of the LORD up to himself in the City of David; instead he turned it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
11The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and his entire household.
12King David was told, "The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him because of the ark of God." So David went and brought the ark of God up from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with rejoicing.
13So David did not take the ark with him to the City of David, but had it turned aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
14The ark of God remained with the household of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that he had.
