The total workforce of the Levites
The number 8580 appears in Numbers 4:48 as the total count of Levites from all three Levitical clans – Kohath, Gershon and Merari – who were mustered for service at the Tabernacle. The muster included men between 30 and 50 years old, that is, those in their full strength for service. That God allowed exactly 8580 men to be counted underscores His careful order in managing what is holy. Each individual was numbered and assigned a specific task, which shows that service to God is not random but carefully planned and structured. The number represents the sum of the counts from the three clans: 2750 from Kohath, 2630 from Gershon and 3200 from Merari, and demonstrates how the entire tribe of Levi worked together in the sanctuary service. The census of the Levites in Numbers 4 differs from the general population count in chapters 1–2, as it applied only to men between the ages of 30 and 50, unlike the military census which counted those aged 20 and older. The three Levitical families had different responsibilities: the Kohathites carried the most holy objects (the ark of the covenant, the lampstand, etc.), the Gershonites were responsible for the curtains and hangings, and the Merarites for the framework and pillars of the tabernacle. Rabbinic tradition emphasizes that the precise counting of the Levites shows God's love for those chosen for holy service—each individual is counted separately to show their value in God's eyes.*
