David mustered the troops who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.

He sent the army out in three divisions: a third under Joab, a third under Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the troops, "I myself will surely march out with you."

But the men said, "You must not go out. If we are put to flight, no one will care about us; even if half of us die, no one will care. But you are worth ten thousand of us. It is better now that you stand ready to help us from the city."

The king said to them, "I will do whatever seems best to you." So the king stood beside the gate while all the troops marched out by hundreds and by thousands.

The king ordered Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the troops heard the king give this order to all the commanders concerning Absalom.

So the army marched into the field against Israel, and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.

There the army of Israel was routed before the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great that day—twenty thousand men.

The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest devoured more men that day than the sword.

Absalom happened to meet David's men. He was riding on his mule, and as the mule passed under the thick branches of a great oak, Absalom's head caught fast in the tree. He was left hanging between heaven and earth while the mule beneath him went on.

A certain man saw it and reported to Joab, "I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak."

Joab said to the man who told him, "You saw him? Then why didn't you strike him to the ground right there? I would gladly have given you ten pieces of silver and a belt."

But the man replied to Joab, "Even if a thousand pieces of silver were weighed into my hands, I would not lift my hand against the king's son. In our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, 'Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.'

"Or if I had dealt treacherously against my own life—and nothing is hidden from the king—you yourself would have stood aloof."

Joab said, "I will not waste time with you like this." He took three javelins in his hand and thrust them into Absalom's heart while he was still alive in the heart of the oak.

Then ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom, struck him, and killed him.

Joab sounded the ram's horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel, for Joab held them back.

They took Absalom, threw him into a deep pit in the forest, and piled a very great heap of stones over him. Meanwhile all Israel fled, each to his own home.

During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and set it up for himself in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in remembrance." He named the pillar after himself, and to this day it is called Absalom's Monument.

Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, "Let me run and bring the king the news that the LORD has vindicated him against his enemies."

But Joab said to him, "You are not the man to carry news today. You may carry news another day, but not today, because the king's son is dead."

Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed to Joab and ran off.

Ahimaaz son of Zadok pressed Joab again: "Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite." Joab said, "Why do you want to run, my son? You have no news that will bring you a reward."

"Come what may, I want to run," he said. So Joab told him, "Run." Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite.

David was sitting between the two gates. The watchman went up to the roof of the gateway by the wall, looked out, and saw a man running alone.

The watchman called out and told the king. The king said, "If he is alone, he has news to report." And the man came steadily closer.

Then the watchman saw another man running, and he called down to the gatekeeper, "Look, another man is running alone!" The king said, "He too is bringing news."

The watchman said, "It seems to me the first man runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok." "He is a good man," said the king. "He comes with good news."

Ahimaaz called out to the king, "All is well!" He bowed before the king with his face to the ground and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has handed over the men who raised their hands against my lord the king."

The king asked, "Is the young man Absalom safe?" Ahimaaz answered, "I saw a great commotion when the king's servant Joab sent me, your servant, but I do not know what it was."

The king said, "Step aside and stand here." So he stepped aside and stood there.

Then the Cushite arrived and said, "Let my lord the king hear the good news: today the LORD has vindicated you and freed you from the hand of all who rose up against you."

The king asked the Cushite, "Is the young man Absalom safe?" The Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rose up against you to do you harm, be like that young man."

Ittai the Gittite (אִתַּי הַגִּתִּי) is mentioned here as one of three commanders to whom David entrusted his forces. The fact that this Philistine mercenary from Gath—Goliath’s hometown—now leads a third of David’s army demonstrates the remarkable trust David placed in him. Ittai had arrived shortly before as a refugee (2 Sam 15:19–22), but his loyalty during the crisis made him one of David’s most trusted leaders.

Ahimaaz, son of Zadok, was the high priest’s son and served as a messenger. His eagerness to bring news to David, along with his cautious manner in avoiding mention of Absalom’s death, reveals both his loyalty to the king and his understanding of David’s feelings.

The mule as a riding animal (v. 9): The mule was a royal mount in Israel. That Absalom rode on a mule underscores his royal pretensions—but the animal’s flight beneath him symbolizes how his hold on the kingdom slipped from him.
