Hem Personer Barabbas Barabbas was a Jewish prisoner who was imprisoned for rebellion and murder when Jesus was brought to trial. 19 Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city and for murder. grek ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον ⸂βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ⸃.
7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder in the uprising. grek ἦν δὲ ὁ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν ⸀στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν.
When Pilate gave the people the choice to release Jesus or Barabbas, they shouted that Barabbas should be freed and Jesus crucified.
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death. grek Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἔπεισαν τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα αἰτήσωνται τὸν Βαραββᾶν τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν ἀπολέσωσιν.
21 The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas." grek ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Τίνα θέλετε ἀπὸ τῶν δύο ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· ⸀Τὸν Βαραββᾶν.
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead. grek οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς.
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified. grek ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν, καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ.
Pilate granted the crowd's request and released Barabbas, while handing Jesus over to be crucified. Barabbas went free while the innocent one took his place.
26 Then he released Barabbas to them, and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified. grek τότε ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν, τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας παρέδωκεν ἵνα σταυρωθῇ.
40 They shouted again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a bandit. grek ἐκραύγασαν οὖν ⸀πάλιν λέγοντες· Μὴ τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τὸν Βαραββᾶν. ἦν δὲ ὁ Βαραββᾶς λῃστής.
It was customary for the Roman governor to release a prisoner at the people's request during the Passover festival, which made Barabbas' release possible.
15 At the festival the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner of their choosing. grek Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν εἰώθει ὁ ἡγεμὼν ἀπολύειν ἕνα τῷ ὄχλῳ δέσμιον ὃν ἤθελον.
16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Jesus Barabbas. grek εἶχον δὲ τότε δέσμιον ἐπίσημον λεγόμενον ⸀Ἰησοῦν Βαραββᾶν.
17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?" grek συνηγμένων οὖν αὐτῶν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν, ⸂Ἰησοῦν τὸν⸃ Βαραββᾶν ἢ Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον χριστόν;
39 But it is your custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" grek ἔστιν δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ⸂ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν⸃ ἐν τῷ πάσχα· βούλεσθε οὖν ⸄ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν⸅ τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
