The Birth in Bethlehem

Jesus was born of the virgin Mary in Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecies about the Messiah.

1In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the entire Roman world should be registered.
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἐξῆλθεν δόγμα παρὰ Καίσαρος Αὐγούστου ἀπογράφεσθαι πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην·
2This was the first registration, made while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
(⸀αὕτη ἀπογραφὴ πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας Κυρηνίου·)
3So everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.
καὶ ἐπορεύοντο πάντες ἀπογράφεσθαι, ἕκαστος εἰς τὴν ⸀ἑαυτοῦ πόλιν.
4Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he belonged to the house and family of David.
Ἀνέβη δὲ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐκ πόλεως Ναζαρὲθ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν εἰς πόλιν Δαυὶδ ἥτις καλεῖται Βηθλέεμ, διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐξ οἴκου καὶ πατριᾶς Δαυίδ,
5He went to be registered with Mary, who was pledged to be his wife and was expecting a child.
ἀπογράψασθαι σὺν Μαριὰμ τῇ ⸂ἐμνηστευμένῃ αὐτῷ⸃, οὔσῃ ἐγκύῳ.
6While they were there, the time came for her to give birth,
ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν,
7and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.[^1] [^1]: The Greek word can also mean "guest room" or "lodging place," not necessarily a commercial inn.
καὶ ἔτεκεν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν πρωτότοκον, καὶ ἐσπαργάνωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέκλινεν αὐτὸν ⸀ἐν φάτνῃ, διότι οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς τόπος ἐν τῷ καταλύματι.

The Baptism in the Jordan

John baptized Jesus, and the Holy Spirit came upon him like a dove.

13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.
*
Översättning

The Greek verb παραγίνεται is a present-tense form ("arrives," "comes on the scene"), one of Matthew's vivid "historical presents" that make the narrative immediate. English narrative convention — and the rhythm of reading aloud — favors the past tense here, so it is rendered "came." The Greek word order is literally "from Galilee to the Jordan to John"; the translation joins the two goals as "to John at the Jordan" so that the sentence has a single natural landing point and does not stumble over two consecutive "to" phrases. The closing phrase τοῦ βαπτισθῆναι ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ is an articular infinitive expressing purpose: "in order to be baptized by him." "To be baptized by him" keeps that sense while preserving the short, weighted ending that suits oral reading; a fuller rendering could be "for the purpose of being baptized by him," but that is heavier than the Greek feels.

Språkligt

Τότε ("then") is a favorite connective of this Gospel, used far more often here than in the other Gospels; it marks a new scene rather than strict chronological sequence. παραγίνομαι is built from παρά ("alongside") + γίνομαι ("become, come to be"), hence "to come to be present, to show up" — a slightly more formal verb than the ordinary ἔρχομαι, often used of a public appearance (it is used of John himself in verse 1). The verb βαπτίζω means to dip, immerse, or plunge; the passive infinitive here makes Jesus the recipient of the action, with ὑπό marking John as the agent.

Teologiskt

The scene raises the question the next verses address: why would Jesus submit to a baptism associated with repentance and confession of sins? Christian interpreters have answered in several ways: that Jesus identifies with the people he came to save, standing where sinners stand; that he consecrates the waters and inaugurates Christian baptism; that he publicly accepts his messianic vocation as the servant who is numbered with the transgressors; and that, as verse 15 says, he acts "to fulfill all righteousness." Notably, the initiative is entirely his — he travels the distance and presents himself — which the deliberate purpose clause underlines.

Historiskt

The journey from Galilee to the Jordan baptism sites was substantial — roughly 100 kilometers or more on foot down the Jordan valley, several days' travel — so this is a deliberate pilgrimage, not a casual encounter. John's activity is placed in the wilderness of Judea near the lower Jordan, a region rich in symbolism as the place where Israel had entered the promised land. Ritual washing was familiar in the Jewish world through immersion pools used for purification, but John's once-for-all baptism administered by another, tied to repentance in view of the coming kingdom, was distinctive.

Textkritiskt

The wording of this verse is unusually stable across the manuscript tradition. The only variations are minor and do not affect the sense: a few witnesses differ over the presence of the definite article before "John," a normal fluctuation with personal names in Greek.

Liturgiskt

This verse opens the Gospel reading for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, celebrated in many traditions at the close of the Christmas–Epiphany season, and it is frequently read at baptismal liturgies as the pattern and warrant for Christian baptism.

Τότε παραγίνεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην τοῦ βαπτισθῆναι ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ.
14But John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?"
*
Översättning

The verb rendered "tried to prevent" (diekōluen) is imperfect, which here carries a conative sense — an attempt begun but not completed. Renderings such as "would have prevented him" or "kept trying to stop him" capture the same nuance; a flat "prevented" would wrongly suggest John succeeded. The compound prefix dia- intensifies the simple verb, so the resistance is firm, not a polite gesture. In the second half, the Greek sets two pronouns in emphatic contrast ("I ... you ... and you ... to me"); the added "and yet" makes that astonishment audible when read aloud, since English cannot stress word order the way Greek can. The final clause is a question in form but an objection in force.

Språkligt

Both pronouns egō ("I") and sy ("you") are expressed, though Greek verb endings already indicate person — a deliberate emphasis that frames the sentence as a chiasm: I—you, you—me. The present tense erchē ("you come") is vivid, describing the action as unfolding before John's eyes. The idiom chreian echō ("I have need") is stronger than a mere preference; it states necessity.

Textkritiskt

Some manuscripts read simply "he" rather than naming John; a number of witnesses also omit the name, while others include it. The sense is unaffected, since the previous verse has just introduced John, and the fuller reading may reflect a scribal clarification for public reading.

Teologiskt

John's protest raises the question that occupied the early church: why would the sinless one submit to a baptism of repentance? The exchange preserved here answers it in advance — Jesus is not confessing sin but identifying with the people he came to save and "fulfilling all righteousness." John's words also confess the relative ranks he has already announced: the one coming after him is mightier, and John is unworthy even to carry his sandals.

Historiskt

John's baptism at the Jordan was a public act of repentance in preparation for the coming judgment, drawing crowds from Judea and the surrounding region. Ritual washings were familiar in Jewish practice, but they were normally self-administered; John's role as the one who baptizes others gave him unusual authority, which is precisely what makes his reversal of roles here so striking to him.

ὁ δὲ ⸀Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων· Ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με;
15But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so for now, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.
*
Översättning

The Greek opens with the participial idiom "answering, said to him," a Semitic-flavored redundancy common in the Gospels; English rhythm favors the simple "answered him." "Let it be so for now" renders ἄφες ἄρτι, literally just "permit — now," with no object expressed; the verb ἄφες means "allow, let go, leave it," so alternatives include "Let it be" or "Allow it for the present." The adverb ἄρτι marks this as a concession for the present moment, not a permanent arrangement. The final clause is literally "then he permits him," with no name given; since Greek keeps the same verb (ἀφίησιν) as Jesus' command, John is clearly the one who yields, so the subject is supplied as "John" and rendered "consented" to make the sense audible when read aloud.

Språkligt

The verb ἀφίημι frames the whole exchange: Jesus says ἄφες ("permit"), and the verse closes with ἀφίησιν ("he permits") — a deliberate echo that ties command and compliance together. That closing verb is a historic present, a vivid narrative device that puts the action before the reader's eyes; English narrative convention normally renders it as past. πρέπον ἐστίν is an impersonal construction meaning "it is proper, seemly, becoming" — the language of what fits a situation rather than what a rule demands. Note the plural "for us": both Jesus and John share this obligation.

Textkritiskt

Some witnesses read πρὸς αὐτόν ("to him") while others have the simple dative αὐτῷ; the meaning is unaffected. A few manuscripts omit the pronoun altogether, and some place the verb of speaking differently in the sentence. None of these variants alters the sense of the verse.

Teologiskt

"Fulfill all righteousness" has been read in several ways. Some understand δικαιοσύνη as God's saving purpose or requirement, which Jesus embraces in solidarity with the people he came to save. Others take it as obedience to the whole will of God, so that Jesus submits to John's baptism not because he needs repentance but because it belongs to the path laid out for him. Still others emphasize that Jesus identifies with sinners here, standing where they stand. The verb "fulfill" is a keyword in this Gospel, used repeatedly of prophecy and of the Law being brought to completion, which suggests Jesus is placing his baptism inside the larger sweep of God's plan.

Historiskt

John's baptism was an immersion tied to repentance and the coming judgment, offered to Jews as well as Gentiles, which made it striking in its own setting. John's protest reflects the natural order of teacher and disciple: the greater does not submit to the lesser. Jesus' answer reverses that expectation without denying John's own recognition of rank, and John's yielding shows him accepting a role he did not seek.

Liturgiskt

This passage is read in many traditions at the feast marking the Baptism of the Lord, near the close of the Epiphany season, where it stands alongside the descent of the Spirit and the voice from heaven in the following verses.

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν ⸂πρὸς αὐτόν⸃· Ἄφες ἄρτι, οὕτως γὰρ πρέπον ἐστὶν ἡμῖν πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην. τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτόν.
16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. And behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him.
*
Översättning

The Greek opens with a participle, "having been baptized," followed by the adverb εὐθύς ("immediately"). Rendering this as "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water" preserves the tight sequence while giving the sentence a natural spoken cadence; a more wooden option would be "And Jesus, having been baptized, immediately went up from the water." The adverb is attached to the coming up out of the water, not to the baptism itself. The phrase ὡσεὶ περιστεράν is rendered "like a dove"; it may describe the manner of the descent (gently, as a dove descends) rather than a visible bird-shape, and the translation leaves both readings open. "And behold" retains the Greek ἰδού, a narrative attention-marker that signals a sudden, wondrous turn; some translations drop it or render it "suddenly," but keeping it preserves the solemn, oral quality of the storytelling.

Språkligt

ἀνέβη ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος literally means "went up from the water," implying he had been standing in it. ἠνεῴχθησαν ("were opened") is a divine passive — God is the unnamed actor. The Greek πνεῦμα means both "spirit" and "breath/wind," an ambiguity that recalls the Spirit of God hovering over the waters in the creation account. Note the double participle καταβαῖνον … ἐρχόμενον, "descending … coming," which slows the sentence and lets the vision unfold; the translation keeps both verbs rather than collapsing them into one.

Textkritiskt

Manuscripts differ at several points. Some read "immediately came up" while others have simply "came up"; some add "to him" after "the heavens were opened." A number of witnesses read "the Spirit" with the article, others without, and a few say "the Spirit of God" while some early ones read simply "the Spirit." There is also variation in whether the dove is in the accusative (agreeing with the Spirit) or another case, which slightly shifts whether "like a dove" describes the Spirit's form or its manner of descent. None of these variants alters the substance of the scene.

Teologiskt

This is one of the clearest trinitarian scenes in the Gospels: the Son is in the water, the Spirit descends, and in the next verse the Father speaks. The opening of the heavens echoes the prophetic longing that God would tear open the heavens and come down, and marks the end of a long silence. Interpreters debate whether the Spirit's descent is an anointing that equips Jesus for his mission (as prophets and kings were anointed) or a public attestation of who he already is; Matthew's narrative, where Jesus is conceived by the Spirit, favors the latter, with the baptism serving as commissioning rather than empowerment newly given.

Historiskt

Baptism by immersion in the Jordan fits the practice of ritual washing widely attested in first-century Judaism, though John's baptism was a one-time act of repentance rather than a repeated purification. Doves were common in Jewish life as the offering of the poor and appear in Jewish tradition as an image of Israel and, in some readings, of the Spirit hovering over the waters at creation. The heavens "opening" is standard language in visionary literature of the period for the boundary between God's realm and the human world being breached.

Liturgiskt

This passage is read at the celebration of the Lord's baptism, which in many traditions closes the Christmas season and opens the ministry of Jesus. It is also widely used in baptismal liturgies, where the descent of the Spirit and the voice from heaven shape the prayers spoken over those being baptized.

⸂βαπτισθεὶς δὲ⸃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ⸂εὐθὺς ἀνέβη⸃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος· καὶ ἰδοὺ ⸀ἠνεῴχθησαν οἱ οὐρανοί, καὶ εἶδεν ⸀πνεῦμα θεοῦ καταβαῖνον ὡσεὶ ⸀περιστερὰν ἐρχόμενον ἐπʼ αὐτόν·
17And behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
*
Översättning

The Greek has no finite verb here: literally "and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying." English requires "said" to complete the sentence, and quotation marks to mark the words spoken; both are supplied for the sake of natural reading. The Greek plural "the heavens" (a Semitic idiom, since Hebrew and Aramaic normally use a plural form) is rendered by the English singular "heaven," which carries the same sense. "My beloved Son" translates a Greek phrase that could equally be laid out as "my Son, the Beloved," where "the Beloved" stands almost as a title; the smoother adjectival wording was chosen for oral flow. "In whom I am well pleased" renders an aorist verb of delight; alternatives include "with whom I am well pleased," "in whom I delight," and "on whom my favor rests."

Språkligt

The word rendered "beloved" (agapētos) is built on the same root as the verb agapaō, "to love." In the Greek Old Testament it regularly translates a Hebrew word meaning "only one, unique" — most famously of Isaac, Abraham's "beloved/only" son whom he was asked to offer up. So the word carries both warmth and exclusiveness: not merely "dear" but "one of a kind." The verb eudokēsa is an aorist, which in Greek can express a settled, timeless disposition rather than a past moment; hence the present-tense English "I am well pleased." Some hear in it an echo of a decision made in eternity: "in whom I have taken my delight."

Teologiskt

The words weave together two strands of Scripture: the royal enthronement declaration "You are my Son" and the opening of the first Servant Song, "Behold my servant… my chosen, in whom my soul delights." Jesus is thus identified at once as the messianic King and as the suffering Servant. Note that in this Gospel the voice speaks in the third person — "This is" rather than "You are" — making the words a public declaration to witnesses as much as an address to Jesus. Read together with the previous verse, the scene shows Father, Son, and Spirit together, and has long been treated as a foundational text for Trinitarian doctrine. Against an adoptionist reading, the traditional interpretation holds that the voice announces what Jesus already is rather than conferring a new status upon him. The same words return at the Transfiguration, with "listen to him" added.

Textkritiskt

Some manuscripts, notably one important bilingual codex along with Old Latin and Syriac witnesses and several early Christian writers, read "You are my Son" here, matching the wording found in the parallel accounts. This is generally judged a harmonization to the more familiar second-person form, and the third-person reading "This is" is strongly supported by the earliest and most widespread witnesses. A few witnesses also vary between "out of the heavens" and "out of heaven."

Historiskt

In Jewish tradition of this period, with the age of the prophets believed to have ended, God's word was sometimes said to come through a heavenly voice — the rabbis called it the bat qol, "daughter of a voice." Such a voice was regarded as a lesser echo of prophecy. The Gospel scene deliberately outstrips that expectation: the heavens themselves are torn open, the Spirit descends visibly, and the voice speaks directly and unmistakably, signaling that the long silence has ended.

Liturgiskt

This verse is the climax of the Gospel reading for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which closes the Epiphany season in many traditions, and it belongs to the ancient cluster of Epiphany themes — the visit of the magi, the baptism, and the wedding at Cana — as three manifestations of Christ's identity. The words are also widely used in baptismal liturgies and in blessings of water, linking the believer's baptism to Christ's own.

καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν λέγουσα· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα.

The Sermon on the Mount

Jesus gave his most famous sermon about life in God's kingdom.

1When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. He sat down, and his disciples came to him,
Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος· καὶ καθίσαντος αὐτοῦ προσῆλθαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ·
2and he began to teach them, saying:
καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς λέγων·
3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.
4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται.
5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
μακάριοι οἱ πραεῖς, ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσι τὴν γῆν.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην, ὅτι αὐτοὶ χορτασθήσονται.
7Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται.
8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ, ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν θεὸν ὄψονται.
9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοί, ὅτι αὐτοὶ υἱοὶ θεοῦ κληθήσονται.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.
11Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you falsely because of me.
μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ διώξωσιν καὶ εἴπωσιν πᾶν ⸀πονηρὸν καθʼ ὑμῶν ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.
12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven; that is how they persecuted the prophets who came before you.
χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς· οὕτως γὰρ ἐδίωξαν τοὺς προφήτας τοὺς πρὸ ὑμῶν.
9This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Οὕτως οὖν προσεύχεσθε ὑμεῖς· Πάτερ ἡμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς· ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου,
10your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
ἐλθέτω ἡ βασιλεία σου, γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου, ὡς ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ⸀ἐπὶ γῆς·
11Give us today our daily bread.
τὸν ἄρτον ἡμῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον δὸς ἡμῖν σήμερον·
12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
καὶ ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ὀφειλήματα ἡμῶν, ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς ⸀ἀφήκαμεν τοῖς ὀφειλέταις ἡμῶν·
13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."
καὶ μὴ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς εἰς πειρασμόν, ἀλλὰ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ ⸀πονηροῦ.

The Crucifixion

Jesus was crucified at Golgotha for the sins of the world.

17and carrying his own cross he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
καὶ βαστάζων ⸂αὑτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν⸃ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς ⸀τὸν λεγόμενον Κρανίου Τόπον, ⸀ὃ λέγεται Ἑβραϊστὶ Γολγοθα,
18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
ὅπου αὐτὸν ἐσταύρωσαν, καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἄλλους δύο ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἐντεῦθεν, μέσον δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
19Pilate also had a notice written and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
ἔγραψεν δὲ καὶ τίτλον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ· ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον· Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
30When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
ὅτε οὖν ἔλαβεν τὸ ὄξος ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Τετέλεσται, καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.
45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης.
46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"—that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ⸀ἀνεβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων· ⸂Ἠλὶ ἠλὶ⸃ λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι; τοῦτʼ ἔστιν· Θεέ μου θεέ μου, ἱνατί με ἐγκατέλιπες;
50But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.
51And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη ⸂ἀπʼ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω εἰς δύο⸃, καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐσείσθη, καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν,

The Resurrection

Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.

1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
Ὀψὲ δὲ σαββάτων, τῇ ἐπιφωσκούσῃ εἰς μίαν σαββάτων, ἦλθεν ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἡ ἄλλη Μαρία θεωρῆσαι τὸν τάφον.
2Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, went up, rolled away the stone, and sat on it.
καὶ ἰδοὺ σεισμὸς ἐγένετο μέγας· ἄγγελος γὰρ κυρίου καταβὰς ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ⸀καὶ προσελθὼν ἀπεκύλισε τὸν ⸀λίθον καὶ ἐκάθητο ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ.
5But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν ταῖς γυναιξίν· Μὴ φοβεῖσθε ὑμεῖς, οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι Ἰησοῦν τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον ζητεῖτε·
6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
οὐκ ἔστιν ὧδε, ἠγέρθη γὰρ καθὼς εἶπεν· δεῦτε ἴδετε τὸν τόπον ὅπου ⸀ἔκειτο·
1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
Τῇ δὲ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ἔρχεται πρωῒ σκοτίας ἔτι οὔσης εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ βλέπει τὸν λίθον ἠρμένον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου.
11But Mary stood outside the tomb, weeping. As she wept, she bent down to look inside,
Μαρία δὲ εἱστήκει πρὸς ⸂τῷ μνημείῳ ἔξω κλαίουσα⸃. ὡς οὖν ἔκλαιεν παρέκυψεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον,
14With that she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.
⸀ταῦτα εἰποῦσα ἐστράφη εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἑστῶτα, καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν.
15"Woman, why are you weeping?" Jesus said to her. "Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him off, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."
λέγει ⸀αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς· Γύναι, τί κλαίεις; τίνα ζητεῖς; ἐκείνη δοκοῦσα ὅτι ὁ κηπουρός ἐστιν λέγει αὐτῷ· Κύριε, εἰ σὺ ἐβάστασας αὐτόν, εἰπέ μοι ποῦ ἔθηκας αὐτόν, κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἀρῶ.
16Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned to him and said in Aramaic, "Rabboni!"—which means Teacher.
λέγει ⸀αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς· ⸀Μαριάμ. στραφεῖσα ἐκείνη λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀Ἑβραϊστί· Ραββουνι (ὃ λέγεται Διδάσκαλε).
17Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
λέγει ⸀αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς· Μή μου ἅπτου, οὔπω γὰρ ἀναβέβηκα πρὸς τὸν ⸀πατέρα· πορεύου δὲ πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου καὶ εἰπὲ αὐτοῖς· Ἀναβαίνω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ πατέρα ὑμῶν καὶ θεόν μου καὶ θεὸν ὑμῶν.
18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.
ἔρχεται ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ⸀ἀγγέλλουσα τοῖς μαθηταῖς ὅτι ⸀Ἑώρακα τὸν κύριον καὶ ταῦτα εἶπεν αὐτῇ.

The Ascension

Jesus ascended into heaven and promised to return.

9When he had said this, as they watched, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν βλεπόντων αὐτῶν ἐπήρθη καὶ νεφέλη ὑπέλαβεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν.
10They were staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white robes stood beside them.
καὶ ὡς ἀτενίζοντες ἦσαν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν πορευομένου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες δύο παρειστήκεισαν αὐτοῖς ἐν ⸂ἐσθήσεσι λευκαῖς⸃,
11"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go."
