Levite and Rebuilder of Jerusalem's Wall

Binnui is a name that appears several times in the post-exilic books of the Old Testament. He is best known as a Levite who participated in rebuilding Jerusalem's wall under Nehemiah, and as one of those who sealed the covenant with God. Several individuals by this name were also involved in the issue of foreign wives during Ezra's reforms.

Rebuilding Jerusalem's Wall

Binnui, son of Henadad, repaired a section of Jerusalem's wall under Nehemiah's leadership.

24Next to him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the angle and the corner,
אַחֲרָ֣יו הֶחֱזִ֗יק בִּנּ֛וּי בֶּן־חֵנָדָ֖ד מִדָּ֣ה שֵׁנִ֑ית מִבֵּ֣ית עֲזַרְיָ֔ה עַד־הַמִּקְצ֖וֹעַ וְעַד־הַפִּנָּֽה׃ ‬

Further Work on the Wall

Binnui worked on another section of the wall, from Azariah's house to the corner of the wall.

24Next to him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the angle and the corner,
אַחֲרָ֣יו הֶחֱזִ֗יק בִּנּ֛וּי בֶּן־חֵנָדָ֖ד מִדָּ֣ה שֵׁנִ֑ית מִבֵּ֣ית עֲזַרְיָ֔ה עַד־הַמִּקְצ֖וֹעַ וְעַד־הַפִּנָּֽה׃ ‬
25and Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace of the king, beside the court of the guard. Next to him was Pedaiah son of Parosh.
פָּלָ֣ל בֶּן־אוּזַי֮ מִנֶּ֣גֶד הַמִּקְצוֹעַ֒ וְהַמִּגְדָּ֗ל הַיּוֹצֵא֙ מִבֵּ֤ית הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֖ר לַחֲצַ֣ר הַמַּטָּרָ֑ה אַחֲרָ֖יו פְּדָיָ֥ה בֶן־פַּרְעֹֽשׁ׃ ס ‬

Sealing the Covenant

Binnui was among the Levites who sealed the covenant to follow God's law during Nehemiah's renewal of the covenant.

Return from Exile

Binnui is mentioned among those who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel, as part of Israel's restoration.

The Question of Foreign Wives

Several men named Binnui were among those who had taken foreign wives and, during Ezra's reforms, committed themselves to sending them away.

Levitical Service at the Reading of the Law

Binnui was among the Levites who helped the people understand the law when Ezra read it aloud to the assembly.

7And Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—the Levites—explained the Law to the people while they remained in their places.
וְיֵשׁ֡וּעַ וּבָנִ֡י וְשֵׁרֵ֥בְיָ֣ה ׀ יָמִ֡ין עַקּ֡וּב שַׁבְּתַ֣י ׀ הֽוֹדִיָּ֡ה מַעֲשֵׂיָ֡ה קְלִיטָ֣א עֲזַרְיָה֩ יוֹזָבָ֨ד חָנָ֤ן פְּלָאיָה֙ וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם מְבִינִ֥ים אֶת־הָעָ֖ם לַתּוֹרָ֑ה וְהָעָ֖ם עַל־עָמְדָֽם׃ ‬
