Nehemiah chapter 3 describes the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls after the exile. The gates are named with those who built them—a testimony to community and cooperation. The list proceeds counter-clockwise from the north.

Sheep Gate

Eliashib the high priest and the priests rebuilt it. It is called the Sheep Gate because sacrificial animals were brought in here to the temple.

Fish Gate

The sons of Senaah rebuilt it. Through this gate, fishermen from the coast brought their catch to the market.

Old Gate (Jeshanah Gate)

Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired it. One of the oldest gates in the city.

Valley Gate

Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah rebuilt it. The gate led out to the Valley of Hinnom west of the city.

Dung Gate (Refuse Gate)

Malchijah son of Recab rebuilt it. From here, garbage and waste were carried out to the Valley of Hinnom.

Fountain Gate

Shallun, the ruler of the district of Mizpah, rebuilt it. Near the Pool of Siloam and the King's Garden.

Water Gate

The temple servants living on Ophel worked here. It led down to the Gihon Spring, the city's main water source.

Horse Gate

The priests repaired this one, each in front of his own house. The king's horses were led in and out here.

East Gate (Miphkad Gate)

Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, repaired it. Also called the Muster Gate.

Guard Gate

The work was completed back at the Sheep Gate where they started—a full circle around the city.

Then Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests set to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set its doors in place, and they consecrated the wall as far as the Tower of the Hundred, all the way to the Tower of Hananel.
Next to him the men of Jericho built, and next to them Zaccur son of Imri.
The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place.
Next to them Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to them Zadok son of Baana.
Next to them the men of Tekoa made repairs, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work of their Lord.[fn: The Hebrew word can mean either their Lord (God) or their lords, that is, their supervisors.]
The Old Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place.
Next to them Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth made repairs, along with the men of Gibeon and Mizpah, which was under the authority of the governor of the province Beyond the River.
Next to him Uzziel son of Harhaiah, a goldsmith, made repairs, and next to him Hananiah, a perfumer. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.
Next to them Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs.
Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his own house, and next to him Hattush son of Hashabniah.
Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section, along with the Tower of the Ovens.
Next to him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of the other half of the district of Jerusalem, made repairs, he and his daughters.
The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah. They rebuilt it and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place, and they repaired a thousand cubits of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.[fn: About 450 metres or 1,500 feet.]
The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth Haccherem. He rebuilt it and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place.
The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Col-Hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it over, and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Shelah by the King's Garden, as far as the steps that go down from the City of David.
After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to a point opposite the tombs of David, as far as the pool that was made and the House of the Warriors.
Next to him the Levites made repairs under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his own district.
Next to him their fellow Levites made repairs under Binnui son of Henadad, ruler of the other half of the district of Keilah.[fn: The Hebrew text reads Bavvai here; he is probably the same man called Binnui in verse 24.]
Next to him Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, from a point facing the ascent to the armory as far as the angle in the wall.
Next to him Baruch son of Zabbai worked with zeal, repairing another section from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
Next to him Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib's house to the far end of it.
Next to him the priests from the surrounding countryside made repairs.
Next to them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house, and next to them Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house.
Next to him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the angle and the corner,
and Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace of the king, beside the court of the guard. Next to him was Pedaiah son of Parosh.
The temple servants were living on Ophel, and they made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate on the east and the projecting tower.
Next to them the men of Tekoa repaired another section, from the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel.
Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house.
Next to them Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house, and next to him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate.
Next to him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his living quarters.
Next to him Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and on to the upper room at the corner.
And between the upper room at the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.
When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he flew into a rage and, seething with anger, ridiculed the Jews.
In the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria he said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore things for themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring stones back to life out of heaps of rubble, burned as they are?"
Tobiah the Ammonite, standing beside him, said, "Whatever they build—if even a fox climbed up on it, it would break down their wall of stones!"
Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their taunts back on their own heads, and hand them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
Do not cover over their guilt, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before you, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.
So we rebuilt the wall, and it was joined together all the way around to half its height, for the people had a heart to work.
