The rich young man was a wealthy and devout Jew who came to Jesus to ask how he could inherit eternal life. Although he had kept the commandments from his youth, he went away sad when Jesus told him to sell everything he owned and give it to the poor, because he had many possessions.

Comes to Jesus with His Question

The rich young man ran up to Jesus, fell on his knees, and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life.

Claims to Have Kept the Commandments

When Jesus mentioned the commandments, the young man replied that he had kept all of them since his youth.

Jesus looked at him and loved him, which shows Jesus' genuine care for this sincere seeker.

The Challenge to Sell Everything

Jesus told him to sell everything he owned, give the money to the poor, and then follow Him. This would give him treasure in heaven.

21Jesus looked at him and loved him, and he said, "One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Goes Away Sad

The young man was dismayed by these words and went away sad, for he was very rich and could not let go of his wealth.

Jesus Teaches About Wealth and Salvation

After the man left, Jesus used the event to teach his disciples how difficult it is for the rich to enter God's kingdom.
