The rich young man was a wealthy and devout Jew who came to Jesus to ask how he could inherit eternal life. Although he had kept the commandments from his youth, he went away sad when Jesus told him to sell everything he owned and give it to the poor, because he had many possessions.

The rich young man ran up to Jesus, fell on his knees, and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life.
