Hem Personer The Widow's Son at Nain The widow's son from Nain was a young man who died and was being carried out for burial when Jesus met the funeral procession outside the city. Moved with compassion for the grieving widow, Jesus raised her only son from the dead. This was one of three instances in the Gospels where Jesus raised someone from the dead.

12 As he approached the town gate, there—a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the town was with her. grek ὡς δὲ ἤγγισεν τῇ πύλῃ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐξεκομίζετο τεθνηκὼς ⸂μονογενὴς υἱὸς⸃ τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτὴ ⸀ἦν χήρα, καὶ ὄχλος τῆς πόλεως ἱκανὸς ⸁ἦν σὺν αὐτῇ.
Jesus arrived at the gate of Nain just as the funeral procession was going out. He saw the widow's grief and was moved with deep compassion.
11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. grek Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς ⸀ἐπορεύθη εἰς πόλιν καλουμένην Ναΐν, καὶ συνεπορεύοντο αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ ⸀αὐτοῦ καὶ ὄχλος πολύς.
12 As he approached the town gate, there—a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her, and he said, "Do not weep." grek καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν ὁ κύριος ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπʼ αὐτῇ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Μὴ κλαῖε.
Jesus touched the bier and said, 'Young man, I say to you: Get up!' The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
14 Then he went up and touched the bier, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." grek καὶ προσελθὼν ἥψατο τῆς σοροῦ, οἱ δὲ βαστάζοντες ἔστησαν, καὶ εἶπεν· Νεανίσκε, σοὶ λέγω, ἐγέρθητι.
15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. grek καὶ ἀνεκάθισεν ὁ νεκρὸς καὶ ἤρξατο λαλεῖν, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ.
Everyone was filled with awe and praised God. The news of this miracle spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.
16 Awe seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us," and, "God has visited his people." grek ἔλαβεν δὲ φόβος πάντας, καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν θεὸν λέγοντες ὅτι Προφήτης μέγας ⸀ἠγέρθη ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ὅτι Ἐπεσκέψατο ὁ θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ.
17 And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. grek καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περὶ αὐτοῦ ⸀καὶ πάσῃ τῇ περιχώρῳ.
