Hollehesh was one of the leaders in Judah who helped seal the covenant with God during Nehemiah's time. He is mentioned in the book of Nehemiah as one of those who put their seal on the written agreement to follow God's law after returning from exile in Babylon.

Sealing of the Covenant

Hollehesh was among the leaders of the people who sealed the covenant to follow God's law and commands after returning from exile.

Rebuilding Jerusalem's Wall

Hollehesh, who was leader over half of the Jerusalem district, helped repair Jerusalem's wall together with his daughter.

12Next to him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of the other half of the district of Jerusalem, made repairs, he and his daughters.
וְעַל־יָד֣וֹ הֶחֱזִ֗יק שַׁלּוּם֙ בֶּן־הַלּוֹחֵ֔שׁ שַׂ֕ר חֲצִ֖י פֶּ֣לֶךְ יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם ה֖וּא וּבְנוֹתָֽיו׃ ס ‬

The People Renew the Covenant

As part of the people's renewal of the covenant, Hollehesh joined other leaders in committing to follow the Law of Moses and avoid intermarriage and Sabbath violations.

מַלּ֥וּךְ חָרִ֖ם בַּעֲנָֽה׃ ‬
29The rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands in order to follow the Law of God, together with their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all who had the knowledge to understand—
וּשְׁאָ֣ר הָעָ֡ם הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים הַ֠לְוִיִּם הַשּׁוֹעֲרִ֨ים הַמְשֹׁרְרִ֜ים הַנְּתִינִ֗ים וְֽכָל־הַנִּבְדָּ֞ל מֵעַמֵּ֤י הָאֲרָצוֹת֙ אֶל־תּוֹרַ֣ת הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים נְשֵׁיהֶ֖ם בְּנֵיהֶ֣ם וּבְנֹתֵיהֶ֑ם כֹּ֖ל יוֹדֵ֥עַ מֵבִֽין׃ ‬
30joined with their brothers, the nobles, and bound themselves with a curse and an oath to walk in the Law of God, given through Moses the servant of God, and to keep and carry out all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, with his judgments and his statutes:
מַחֲזִיקִ֣ים עַל־אֲחֵיהֶם֮ אַדִּירֵיהֶם֒ וּבָאִ֞ים בְּאָלָ֣ה וּבִשְׁבוּעָ֗ה לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ בְּתוֹרַ֣ת הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִתְּנָ֔ה בְּיַ֖ד מֹשֶׁ֣ה עֶֽבֶד־הֽ͏ָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְלִשְׁמ֣וֹר וְלַעֲשׂ֗וֹת אֶת־כָּל־מִצְוֺת֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֲדֹנֵ֔ינוּ וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֖יו וְחֻקָּֽיו׃ ‬

Nehemiah's Reforms

Hollehesh supported Nehemiah's reform work aimed at restoring proper worship and social life in rebuilt Jerusalem.

1In view of all this, we are entering into a binding agreement, put in writing; and on the sealed document are the names of our officials, our Levites, and our priests.
וּבְכָל־זֹ֕את אֲנַ֛חְנוּ כֹּרְתִ֥ים אֲמָנָ֖ה וְכֹתְבִ֑ים וְעַל֙ הֶֽחָת֔וּם שָׂרֵ֥ינוּ לְוִיֵּ֖נוּ כֹּהֲנֵֽינוּ׃ ‬
