The Birth and Lineage of Javan

Javan is mentioned as a son of Japheth in the genealogy after the flood, where Noah's descendants spread across the earth.

1This is the family line of Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.
2The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

The Dispersion of Nations from Javan

From Javan's descendants, the coastal peoples spread into their own territories, each with its own language and clans.

5From these the coastland peoples spread out into their lands, each with its own language, by their clans within their nations.

Javan as a Trading Partner with Tyre

The prophet Ezekiel mentions Javan (Greece) as traders who engaged in exchange with Tyre, including people and bronze goods.

13Greece, Tubal, and Meshech traded with you; they exchanged slaves and articles of bronze for your goods.
19Vedan and Javan from Uzal traded for your merchandise; wrought iron, cassia, and cane were part of your trade.

Javan in Isaiah's Prophecy

Isaiah prophesies about God's glory being proclaimed among distant nations, and Javan is mentioned as one of these peoples.

19I will set a sign among them, and from among them I will send survivors to the nations—to Tarshish, to Put and Lud who draw the bow, to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant coastlands that have never heard my fame or seen my glory. And they will proclaim my glory among the nations.

Javan in the Prophecies of Daniel and Zechariah

In Daniel's vision, Javan (Greece) represents a powerful kingdom that will defeat Persia. Zechariah prophesies about God's victory over the sons of Javan.

21The shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.
20Then he said, "Do you know why I have come to you? Now I must return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come.
13For I have bent Judah as my bow and fitted Ephraim as my arrow. I will rouse your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece, and I will wield you like a warrior's sword.
