Mentioned in the genealogy of the wall builders

Maaseiah is mentioned as the son of Hananiah and the father of Azariah in connection with the listing of those who rebuilt Jerusalem's wall.

23Next to them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house, and next to them Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house.

Azariah's work on the wall

Maaseiah's son Azariah carried out repair work on the wall next to his own house, as part of the coordinated rebuilding led by Nehemiah.

23Next to them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house, and next to them Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house.

24Next to him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the angle and the corner,

The rebuilding of Jerusalem's wall is completed

The great project of rebuilding Jerusalem's wall, in which Maaseiah's family contributed, was completed in just 52 days despite strong opposition.

15So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid, and their confidence sank low, for they knew that this work had been accomplished by our God.

Nehemiah's organization of the wall work

Nehemiah organized the people to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem and assigned the work among various families and groups, including the descendants of Ma'asejah.

17Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be a disgrace."
18I told them how the gracious hand of my God had been upon me, and what the king had said to me. They replied, "Let us start rebuilding." So they set their hands to the good work.
