Martha

The Busy Hostess

Jesu tidDisciplec. 10 BC-?

Martha of Bethany was the sister of Mary and Lazarus. She was known for her hospitality and practical service. Jesus gently corrected her when she was too busy with household tasks, but she also showed strong faith when her brother died. Her confession "You are the Messiah" is one of the clearest in the Gospels.

The Busy Hostess

Martha was busy serving while Jesus visited them, whereas Mary sat and listened.

38As they went on their way, Jesus entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.
39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his word.
40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations. She came to him and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!"
41The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
42but few things are needed—indeed, only one. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her."

The Confession of Faith

When Lazarus died, Martha confessed that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.

20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."
24Martha said to him, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though he dies,
26and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
καὶ πᾶς ὁ ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα· πιστεύεις τοῦτο;
27She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one coming into the world."

At the Tomb

Martha warned about the smell when Jesus asked to open the tomb, but she trusted him.

39"Take away the stone," Jesus said. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by now there is a stench; it has been four days."
40Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?"
λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς ⸀ὄψῃ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ θεοῦ;

The Meal in Bethany

During the meal six days before Passover, Martha served again, while Mary anointed Jesus' feet.

1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
2So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.
