Son of Abinadab who accompanied the ark of the covenant

Ahjo belonged to the family of Abinadab in Kiriath-Jearim, where the ark of the covenant had been kept for about twenty years after the Philistines returned it. As the son of Abinadab and brother of Uzza, he had a special connection to the ark and responsibility for it. When King David decided to bring the ark to Jerusalem, Ahjo went ahead of the new cart carrying it, likely to lead the ox team and clear the way for the procession. His brother Uzza walked beside the cart. During the journey, the oxen stumbled; Uzza reached out to steady the ark, and God’s anger struck him so that he died. This shocking event caused David to postpone the entire project. Ahjo’s role illustrates how one family in Israel was given a unique responsibility connected to the ark and God’s holy presence. The Hebrew name Ahjo (אַחְיוֹ) can also be understood as "his brother," and among scholars there is discussion about whether the term in 2 Sam 6 is a proper name or a designation. Another person with the same name is mentioned in Benjamin’s genealogy in 1 Chronicles.

Transport of the ark of the covenant from Abinadab's house
