David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader.

Then David said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in the cities where they have their pasturelands, that they should gather to us,

and let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul."

The whole assembly agreed to do this, for the plan seemed right in the eyes of all the people.

So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor Brook in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God up from Kiriath Jearim.

David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath Jearim in Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the LORD who is enthroned above the cherubim, the ark that bears his name.

They moved the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.

David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their strength, with songs and lyres and harps, with tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.

When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen had stumbled.

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.

David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah, so he named that place Perez Uzzah, and it is called that to this day.

David was afraid of God that day, and he said, "How can I ever bring the ark of God home to me?"

So David did not take the ark with him to the City of David, but had it turned aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.

The ark of God remained with the household of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that he had.

Places
