Mentioned in Saul's genealogy

Malki-Shua is listed as one of Saul's sons in the genealogy in 1 Samuel.

49Saul's sons were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and the name of the younger was Michal.

The battle on Mount Gilboa

Malki-Shua fell together with his father Saul and his brothers Jonathan and Abinadab in the catastrophic battle against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa.

1Meanwhile the Philistines were fighting against Israel. The men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
2The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.

David's Lament over Saul and His Sons

After the death of Saul and his sons, David sang a lament over them, mourning the loss of Israel's heroes.

17Then David sang this lament for Saul and his son Jonathan,
18and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this song, called The Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:
19Your glory, O Israel, lies slain on your heights. How the mighty have fallen!
20Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.
21Mountains of Gilboa, may you have no dew or rain, nor fields that yield offerings. For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.
22From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, the sword of Saul did not return empty.
23Saul and Jonathan—beloved and gracious in life, in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
24Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and finery, who adorned your garments with gold.
25How the mighty have fallen in the midst of battle! Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother. You were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.
27How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!

The Philistines' Desecration of the Dead

The Philistines found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa, cut off Saul's head, and took his weapons as spoils of war.

8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
9They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent word throughout the land of the Philistines, carrying the news to the temples of their idols and to the people.
10They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

Men from Jabesh-Gilead Retrieve the Bodies

Brave men from Jabesh in Gilead retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan and gave them a dignified burial.

11But when the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
12all their fighting men set out and marched through the night. They took the bodies of Saul and his sons down from the wall of Beth-shan, brought them to Jabesh, and burned them there.
13Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

Mentioned in the Genealogies of Chronicles

Malki-Shua is also mentioned in the genealogy in 1 Chronicles, confirming his place in Saul's family and his death in battle.

33Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.[^1] [^1]: Eshbaal is called Ish-bosheth in the books of Samuel.
39Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
2The Philistines pressed hard after Saul and his sons, and they struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.
