After the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites, he stayed in Ziklag two days.

On the third day a man came from Saul's camp, his clothes torn and dirt on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and bowed low.

David asked him, "Where have you come from?" He answered, "I escaped from the camp of Israel."

"Tell me what happened," David said. He replied, "The army fled from the battle. Many of the men fell and died. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead too."

Then David said to the young man who brought the report, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"

The young man said, "I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and horsemen closing in on him.

He turned around and saw me, and he called out to me. I said, 'Here I am.'

He asked me, 'Who are you?' I answered, 'I am an Amalekite.'

Then he said to me, 'Stand over me and kill me. The agony has gripped me, but I am still alive.'

So I stood over him and killed him, for I knew he could not survive after he had fallen. Then I took the crown from his head and the band from his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord."

Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men with him.

They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

David said to the young man who had brought him the report, "Where are you from?" He answered, "I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite."

David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?"

Then David called one of his men and said, "Go, strike him down!" So he struck him, and he died.

For David had said to him, "Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth testified against you when you said, 'I killed the LORD's anointed.'"

Then David sang this lament for Saul and his son Jonathan,

and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this song, called The Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:

Your glory, O Israel, lies slain on your heights. How the mighty have fallen!

Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.

Mountains of Gilboa, may you have no dew or rain, nor fields that yield offerings. For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, the sword of Saul did not return empty.

Saul and Jonathan—beloved and gracious in life, in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.

Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and finery, who adorned your garments with gold.

How the mighty have fallen in the midst of battle! Jonathan lies slain on your heights.

I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother. You were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.

How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!

Places

Mount Gilboa (הַר הַגִּלְבֹּעַ) is the place where Saul and his sons fell in battle against the Philistines (vv. 6, 21). The mountain lies near the Jezreel Valley. David’s curse over Gilboa—that dew or rain should never fall there again (v. 21)—is a poetic expression of grief and revulsion toward the place where Israel’s leaders died.

Mourning rituals are described in detail: tearing clothes, scattering dust on the head, fasting, and weeping (vv. 2, 11–12). These were standardized expressions of grief in ancient Israel. The fast lasted until evening, which was typical for a one-day mourning fast. These rituals marked the transition from ordinary life to a state of mourning and showed respect for the dead.

Royal insignia—the crown (נֵזֶר) and the armlet (אֶצְעָדָה)—which the messenger brought to David (v. 10), were symbols of royal power. The fact that these items were handed over to David suggested a transfer of authority, even though this was not the messenger’s intention.

Key Terms
