The Fruit of the Spirit and the Deeds of the Flesh
Paul urges the Galatians to walk in the Spirit and not follow the desires of the flesh. He lists the deeds of the flesh, such as sexual immorality, idolatry, strife, and jealousy, and contrasts them with the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh.
Galatians 5,16-26
16So I say: walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
Λέγω δέ, πνεύματι περιπατεῖτε καὶ ἐπιθυμίαν σαρκὸς οὐ μὴ τελέσητε.
17For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit what is against the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
ἡ γὰρ σὰρξ ἐπιθυμεῖ κατὰ τοῦ πνεύματος, τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα κατὰ τῆς σαρκός, ταῦτα ⸀γὰρ ⸂ἀλλήλοις ἀντίκειται⸃, ἵνα μὴ ἃ ⸀ἐὰν θέλητε ταῦτα ποιῆτε.
18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
εἰ δὲ πνεύματι ἄγεσθε, οὐκ ἐστὲ ὑπὸ νόμον.
19Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, indecency,
φανερὰ δέ ἐστιν τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός, ἅτινά ⸀ἐστιν πορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, ἀσέλγεια,
20idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of rage, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions,
εἰδωλολατρία, φαρμακεία, ἔχθραι, ⸂ἔρις, ζῆλος⸃, θυμοί, ἐριθεῖαι, διχοστασίαι, αἱρέσεις,
21envy, drunkenness, wild partying, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
⸀φθόνοι, μέθαι, κῶμοι, καὶ τὰ ὅμοια τούτοις, ἃ προλέγω ὑμῖν ⸀καθὼς προεῖπον ὅτι οἱ τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντες βασιλείαν θεοῦ οὐ κληρονομήσουσιν.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Ὁ δὲ καρπὸς τοῦ πνεύματός ἐστιν ἀγάπη, χαρά, εἰρήνη, μακροθυμία, χρηστότης, ἀγαθωσύνη, πίστις,
23gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.
πραΰτης, ἐγκράτεια· κατὰ τῶν τοιούτων οὐκ ἔστιν νόμος.
24And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
οἱ δὲ τοῦ ⸀Χριστοῦ τὴν σάρκα ἐσταύρωσαν σὺν τοῖς παθήμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις.
25If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
εἰ ζῶμεν πνεύματι, πνεύματι καὶ στοιχῶμεν.
26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
μὴ γινώμεθα κενόδοξοι, ἀλλήλους προκαλούμενοι, ἀλλήλοις φθονοῦντες.
