The Danites Scout and Conquer Laish

The tribe of Dan sends out five scouts who find a peaceful people in Laish. On the way back, six hundred Danites steal Micah's idols and take the young Levite as their priest. They conquer Laish, burn the city, and rebuild it under the name Dan, where they set up the carved image.

Judges 18,1-31

1In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was looking for an inheritance to settle in, because down to that day no inheritance had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.
2So the Danites sent out five men from their clan, chosen from among them all, capable men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to scout the land and explore it. They told them, "Go, explore the land." The men came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and spent the night there.
3While they were near Micah's house, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. They turned aside there and asked him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?"
4He told them, "Micah has done such and such for me. He hired me, and I have become his priest."
5Then they said to him, "Please inquire of God, so we may know whether the journey we are making will succeed."
6The priest answered them, "Go in peace. The journey you are making is under the LORD's eye."
7So the five men went on and came to Laish. They saw that the people there lived in safety, in the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting; there was no one in the land who held power to harass them. They were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.
8When they came back to their kinsmen at Zorah and Eshtaol, their kinsmen asked them, "What do you report?"
9They said, "Get up, let us attack them! We have seen the land, and it is very good. Are you going to sit still? Do not hesitate to go and take possession of the land.
10When you get there, you will come to an unsuspecting people, and the land is wide open. God has given it into your hands—a place where nothing on earth is lacking."
11So six hundred men from the clan of the Danites, armed with weapons of war, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol.
12They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; it lies west of Kiriath-jearim.
13From there they passed on to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.
14Then the five men who had gone to scout out the land of Laish spoke up and said to their kinsmen, "Do you know that in these houses there is an ephod, household gods, a carved image, and a cast idol? Now consider what you should do."
15So they turned aside there and came to the house of the young Levite at Micah's place, and greeted him.
16Meanwhile the six hundred Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood at the entrance of the gate.
17The five men who had gone to scout out the land went up, entered the house, and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the cast idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.
18When these men went into Micah's house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the cast idol, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"
19They said to him, "Be quiet. Put your hand over your mouth and come with us. Be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be priest to the household of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a clan in Israel?"
20This pleased the priest. He took the ephod, the household gods, and the carved image, and went along with the people.
21They turned and set out, placing the children, the livestock, and their goods ahead of them.
22When they were some distance from Micah's house, the men in the houses near Micah's house were called together, and they overtook the Danites.
23They shouted after them, and the Danites turned and said to Micah, "What is the matter with you, that you have called out your men?"
24He answered, "You took the gods I made, and my priest, and went away. What do I have left? How can you ask me, 'What is the matter with you?'"
25The Danites said to him, "Don't raise your voice against us, or angry men will attack you, and you will lose your life and the lives of your household."
26So the Danites went on their way, and Micah, seeing that they were too strong for him, turned and went back home.
27They took what Micah had made, along with his priest, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting. They struck them down with the sword and burned the city.
28There was no one to rescue them, for the city was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone. It lay in the valley near Beth-rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there.
29They named it Dan, after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel; but the city's name had formerly been Laish.
30The Danites set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh,[^1] and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day the land went into exile. [^1]: In the Hebrew text the name is written with a raised letter, and many ancient witnesses read "Moses" here.
31So they set up for themselves Micah's carved image, the one he had made, and it stood there as long as the house of God was at Shiloh.
