David buys the threshing floor and builds an altar
At the prophet Gad's command, David goes up and buys the threshing floor from Araunah the Jebusite to build an altar to the Lord. David insists on paying the full price—fifty shekels of silver—and refuses to offer anything that has cost him nothing. He presents a burnt offering and a peace offering, and the plague stops and turns away from Israel.
2 Samuel 24,18-25
18That day Gad came to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."
19So David went up, as the LORD had commanded through the word of Gad.
20When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his men coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.
21Araunah said, "Why has my lord the king come to his servant?" David answered, "To buy your threshing floor, so that I can build an altar to the LORD and the plague on the people may be stopped."
22Araunah said to David, "Let my lord the king take whatever pleases him and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the ox yokes for the wood.
23All this Araunah gives to the king." And he added, "May the LORD your God accept you."
24But the king said to Araunah, "No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25David built an altar to the LORD there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the LORD answered his prayer for the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
