The Paralytic Lowered Through the Roof
Four men lower a paralyzed man through the roof to Jesus, who forgives his sins and heals him while the scribes accuse him of blasphemy.
Mark 2,1-12
1When he came back to Capernaum a few days later, word spread that he was at home.
Καὶ ⸀εἰσελθὼν πάλιν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ διʼ ⸀ἡμερῶν ἠκούσθη ὅτι ⸂ἐν οἴκῳ⸃ ἐστίν·
2So many people gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he was speaking the word to them.
⸀καὶ συνήχθησαν πολλοὶ ὥστε μηκέτι χωρεῖν μηδὲ τὰ πρὸς τὴν θύραν, καὶ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον.
3Then some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man carried by four of them.
καὶ ἔρχονται ⸂φέροντες πρὸς αὐτὸν παραλυτικὸν⸃ αἰρόμενον ὑπὸ τεσσάρων.
4Since they could not bring the man to Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him, dug through it, and lowered the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying.
καὶ μὴ δυνάμενοι ⸀προσενέγκαι αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον ἀπεστέγασαν τὴν στέγην ὅπου ἦν, καὶ ἐξορύξαντες χαλῶσι τὸν κράβαττον ⸀ὅπου ὁ παραλυτικὸς κατέκειτο.
5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
⸂καὶ ἰδὼν⸃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ· Τέκνον, ⸂ἀφίενταί σου⸃ αἱ ⸀ἁμαρτίαι.
6Some of the scribes were sitting there, reasoning in their hearts,
ἦσαν δέ τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐκεῖ καθήμενοι καὶ διαλογιζόμενοι ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν·
7"Why does this man talk like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
Τί οὗτος οὕτως λαλεῖ; ⸀βλασφημεῖ· τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ θεός;
8At once Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking, and he said to them, "Why are you turning these things over in your hearts?
καὶ ⸀εὐθὺς ἐπιγνοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ ὅτι ⸀οὕτως διαλογίζονται ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ⸀λέγει αὐτοῖς· Τί ταῦτα διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
9Which is easier: to say to the paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'?
τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν τῷ παραλυτικῷ· ⸀Ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι, ἢ εἰπεῖν· ⸀Ἔγειρε καὶ ἆρον ⸂τὸν κράβαττόν σου⸃ καὶ περιπάτει;
10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the paralyzed man,
ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ⸂ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας⸃— λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ·
11"I say to you: get up, take your mat, and go home."
Σοὶ λέγω, ⸀ἔγειρε ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου.
12The man got up, and immediately took his mat and walked out in front of them all. Everyone was astounded and praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"
καὶ ἠγέρθη ⸂καὶ εὐθὺς⸃ ἄρας τὸν κράβαττον ἐξῆλθεν ⸀ἔμπροσθεν πάντων, ὥστε ἐξίστασθαι πάντας καὶ δοξάζειν τὸν θεὸν λέγοντας ὅτι ⸂Οὕτως οὐδέποτε⸃ εἴδομεν.
Matthew 9,1-8
1Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own town.
Καὶ ⸀ἐμβὰς ⸀εἰς πλοῖον διεπέρασεν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν πόλιν.
2And some men brought him a paralyzed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
Καὶ ἰδοὺ προσέφερον αὐτῷ παραλυτικὸν ἐπὶ κλίνης βεβλημένον. καὶ ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν εἶπεν τῷ παραλυτικῷ· Θάρσει, τέκνον· ⸀ἀφίενταί ⸂σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι⸃.
3At that, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming."
καὶ ἰδού τινες τῶν γραμματέων εἶπαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς· Οὗτος βλασφημεῖ.
4Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you harbor evil in your hearts?
καὶ ⸀εἰδὼς ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὰς ἐνθυμήσεις αὐτῶν εἶπεν· ⸀Ἱνατί ἐνθυμεῖσθε πονηρὰ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
5Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
τί γάρ ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν· ⸀Ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι, ἢ εἰπεῖν· ⸀Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει;
6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your bed, and go home."
ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας— τότε λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ· ⸀Ἐγερθεὶς ἆρόν σου τὴν κλίνην καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου.
7And the man got up and went home.
καὶ ἐγερθεὶς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
8When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ὄχλοι ⸀ἐφοβήθησαν καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν θεὸν τὸν δόντα ἐξουσίαν τοιαύτην τοῖς ἀνθρώποις.
Luke 5,17-26
17One day, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διδάσκων, καὶ ἦσαν καθήμενοι Φαρισαῖοι καὶ νομοδιδάσκαλοι οἳ ἦσαν ἐληλυθότες ἐκ πάσης κώμης τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ Ἰουδαίας καὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ· καὶ δύναμις κυρίου ἦν εἰς τὸ ἰᾶσθαι ⸀αὐτόν.
18Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a bed, trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες φέροντες ἐπὶ κλίνης ἄνθρωπον ὃς ἦν παραλελυμένος, καὶ ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν εἰσενεγκεῖν καὶ ⸀θεῖναι ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ.
19When they could find no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles, right into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus.
καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες ποίας εἰσενέγκωσιν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸν ὄχλον ἀναβάντες ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα διὰ τῶν κεράμων καθῆκαν αὐτὸν σὺν τῷ κλινιδίῳ εἰς τὸ μέσον ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
20Seeing their faith, he said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."
καὶ ἰδὼν τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν ⸀εἶπεν· Ἄνθρωπε, ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου.
21The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason among themselves, "Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
καὶ ἤρξαντο διαλογίζεσθαι οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι λέγοντες· Τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὃς λαλεῖ βλασφημίας; τίς δύναται ⸂ἁμαρτίας ἀφεῖναι⸃ εἰ μὴ μόνος ὁ θεός;
22Jesus knew what they were thinking and answered them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts?
ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
23Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν· Ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου, ἢ εἰπεῖν· ⸀Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει;
24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat, and go home."
ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ⸂ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐξουσίαν ἔχει⸃ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας— εἶπεν τῷ παραλελυμένῳ· Σοὶ λέγω, ⸀ἔγειρε καὶ ἄρας τὸ κλινίδιόν σου πορεύου εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου.
25At once the man stood up in front of them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home praising God.
καὶ παραχρῆμα ἀναστὰς ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, ἄρας ἐφʼ ὃ κατέκειτο, ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ δοξάζων τὸν θεόν.
26Amazement gripped them all, and they glorified God. Filled with awe, they said, "We have seen incredible things today."
καὶ ἔκστασις ἔλαβεν ἅπαντας καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν θεόν, καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν φόβου λέγοντες ὅτι Εἴδομεν παράδοξα σήμερον.
