The Pharisees demand a sign and Jesus points to the sign of Jonah
The Pharisees and Sadducees come to Jesus to test him and demand a sign from heaven. Jesus replies that they can interpret the signs in the sky but not the signs of the times, and says that no other sign will be given to an evil and unfaithful generation except the sign of Jonah. Then he leaves them.
Matthew 16,1-4
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test him, asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
Καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ Σαδδουκαῖοι πειράζοντες ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν σημεῖον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπιδεῖξαι αὐτοῖς.
2He answered them, "In the evening you say, 'Fair weather, for the sky is red,'
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ⸂Ὀψίας γενομένης λέγετε· Εὐδία, πυρράζει γὰρ ὁ οὐρανός·
3and in the morning, 'Storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to read the face of the sky, but you cannot read the signs of the times.
καὶ πρωΐ· Σήμερον χειμών, πυρράζει γὰρ στυγνάζων ὁ οὐρανός. ⸀τὸ μὲν πρόσωπον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ γινώσκετε διακρίνειν, τὰ δὲ σημεῖα τῶν καιρῶν οὐ δύνασθε.⸃
4An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Then he left them and went away.
Γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλὶς σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ, καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον ⸀Ἰωνᾶ. καὶ καταλιπὼν αὐτοὺς ἀπῆλθεν.
