Hannah's Song and Samuel's Growth
Hannah praises the Lord in a deep prayer after she has received her son Samuel. The boy remains in Shiloh and serves the Lord under the priest Eli, wearing a linen ephod. Eli blesses Elkanah and Hannah, and the Lord gives her three more sons and two daughters. Samuel grows up with the Lord and is pleasing to both God and people. 1. Samuel 2:1-11 1. Samuel 2:18-21 1. 1 Samuel 2,1-11
1Then Hannah prayed:
"My heart exults in the LORD;
in the LORD my horn is lifted high.
My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies,
for I rejoice in your salvation.
וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל חַנָּה֙ וַתֹּאמַ֔ר עָלַ֤ץ לִבִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה רָ֥מָה קַרְנִ֖י בַּֽיהוָ֑ה רָ֤חַב פִּי֙ עַל־א֣וֹיְבַ֔י כִּ֥י שָׂמַ֖חְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃
2No one is holy like the LORD;
there is none besides you,
and no rock like our God.
אֵין־קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃
3Speak no more so proudly;
let no arrogance come from your mouth,
for the LORD is a God who knows,
and by him every deed is weighed.
אַל־תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה גְבֹהָ֔ה יֵצֵ֥א עָתָ֖ק מִפִּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י אֵ֤ל דֵּעוֹת֙ יְהוָ֔ה *ולא **וְל֥וֹ נִתְכְּנ֖וּ עֲלִלֽוֹת׃
4The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the weak are armed with strength.
קֶ֥שֶׁת גִּבֹּרִ֖ים חַתִּ֑ים וְנִכְשָׁלִ֖ים אָ֥זְרוּ חָֽיִל׃
5Those who were full now hire themselves out for bread,
but the hungry go hungry no more.
Even the barren woman has borne seven,
but she who had many sons is left desolate.
שְׂבֵעִ֤ים בַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ עַד־עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה׃
6The LORD brings death and gives life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
יְהוָ֖ה מֵמִ֣ית וּמְחַיֶּ֑ה מוֹרִ֥יד שְׁא֖וֹל וַיָּֽעַל׃
7The LORD makes poor and makes rich;
he humbles and he exalts.
יְהוָ֖ה מוֹרִ֣ישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁ֑יר מַשְׁפִּ֖יל אַף־מְרוֹמֵֽם׃
8He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
seating them among princes
and giving them a throne of honor.
For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's,
and on them he has set the world.
מֵקִ֨ים מֵעָפָ֜ר דָּ֗ל מֵֽאַשְׁפֹּת֙ יָרִ֣ים אֶבְי֔וֹן לְהוֹשִׁיב֙ עִם־נְדִיבִ֔ים וְכִסֵּ֥א כָב֖וֹד יַנְחִלֵ֑ם כִּ֤י לַֽיהוָה֙ מְצֻ֣קֵי אֶ֔רֶץ וַיָּ֥שֶׁת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם תֵּבֵֽל׃
9He guards the steps of his faithful ones,
but the wicked are silenced in darkness—
for no one prevails by his own strength.
רַגְלֵ֤י *חסידו **חֲסִידָיו֙ יִשְׁמֹ֔ר וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יִדָּ֑מּוּ כִּֽי־לֹ֥א בְכֹ֖חַ יִגְבַּר־אִֽישׁ׃
10Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered;
he will thunder against them from heaven.
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth;
he will give strength to his king
and lift high the horn of his anointed."
יְהוָ֞ה יֵחַ֣תּוּ *מריבו **מְרִיבָ֗יו *עלו **עָלָיו֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם יַרְעֵ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה יָדִ֣ין אַפְסֵי־אָ֑רֶץ וְיִתֶּן־עֹ֣ז לְמַלְכּ֔וֹ וְיָרֵ֖ם קֶ֥רֶן מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃ פ
11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy remained to serve the LORD under Eli the priest.
וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ אֶלְקָנָ֛ה הָרָמָ֖תָה עַל־בֵּית֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֗עַר הָיָ֤ה מְשָׁרֵת֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־פְּנֵ֖י עֵלִ֥י הַכֹּהֵֽן׃
1 Samuel 2,18-21
18But Samuel served before the LORD, a boy wearing a linen ephod.
וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה נַ֕עַר חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד׃
19Each year his mother made him a little robe and brought it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
וּמְעִ֤יל קָטֹן֙ תַּעֲשֶׂה־לּ֣וֹ אִמּ֔וֹ וְהַעַלְתָ֥ה ל֖וֹ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֑ימָה בַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ֙ אֶת־אִישָׁ֔הּ לִזְבֹּ֖חַ אֶת־זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִֽים׃
20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, "May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one asked for and given to the LORD." Then they would return home.
וּבֵרַ֨ךְ עֵלִ֜י אֶת־אֶלְקָנָ֣ה וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וְאָמַר֙ יָשֵׂם֩ יְהוָ֨ה לְךָ֥ זֶ֙רַע֙ מִן־הָאִשָּׁ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את תַּ֚חַת הַשְּׁאֵלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖ל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וְהָלְכ֖וּ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃
21And the LORD showed his care for Hannah: she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
כִּֽי־פָקַ֤ד יְהוָה֙ אֶת־חַנָּ֔ה וַתַּ֛הַר וַתֵּ֥לֶד שְׁלֹשָֽׁה־בָנִ֖ים וּשְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֑וֹת וַיִּגְדַּ֛ל הַנַּ֥עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל עִם־יְהוָֽה׃ ס
1 Samuel 2,26
26And the boy Samuel continued to grow, and he was pleasing both to the LORD and to the people.
וְהַנַּ֣עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְגָדֵ֖ל וָט֑וֹב גַּ֚ם עִם־יְהוָ֔ה וְגַ֖ם עִם־אֲנָשִֽׁים׃ ס
