Paul on the Lord's Supper
Paul corrects the church in Corinth for their wrong attitude toward the Lord's Supper, where they divided into groups and let the hungry go without. He reminds them of how Jesus himself instituted communion and warns against eating and drinking in an unworthy manner.
1 Corinthians 11,17-34
17Now in giving these instructions I have no praise for you, because your gatherings do more harm than good.
Τοῦτο δὲ ⸂παραγγέλλων οὐκ ἐπαινῶ⸃ ὅτι οὐκ εἰς τὸ κρεῖσσον ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸ ἧσσον συνέρχεσθε.
18In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and I believe there is some truth to it.
πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ συνερχομένων ὑμῶν ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ἀκούω σχίσματα ἐν ὑμῖν ὑπάρχειν, καὶ μέρος τι πιστεύω.
19For there have to be factions among you, so that those who are genuine may become evident among you.
δεῖ γὰρ καὶ αἱρέσεις ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι, ἵνα ⸀καὶ οἱ δόκιμοι φανεροὶ γένωνται ἐν ὑμῖν.
20So then, when you gather in the same place, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat,
συνερχομένων οὖν ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ οὐκ ἔστιν κυριακὸν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν,
21for each of you goes ahead with his own meal; one goes hungry while another gets drunk.
ἕκαστος γὰρ τὸ ἴδιον δεῖπνον προλαμβάνει ἐν τῷ φαγεῖν, καὶ ὃς μὲν πεινᾷ, ὃς δὲ μεθύει.
22Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I do not praise you.
μὴ γὰρ οἰκίας οὐκ ἔχετε εἰς τὸ ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν; ἢ τῆς ἐκκλησίας τοῦ θεοῦ καταφρονεῖτε, καὶ καταισχύνετε τοὺς μὴ ἔχοντας; τί ⸂εἴπω ὑμῖν⸃; ἐπαινέσω ὑμᾶς; ἐν τούτῳ οὐκ ἐπαινῶ.
23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
Ἐγὼ γὰρ παρέλαβον ἀπὸ τοῦ κυρίου, ὃ καὶ παρέδωκα ὑμῖν, ὅτι ὁ κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ᾗ ⸀παρεδίδετο ἔλαβεν ἄρτον
24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ⸀εἶπεν· Τοῦτό μού ἐστιν τὸ σῶμα τὸ ὑπὲρ ⸀ὑμῶν· τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν.
25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
ὡσαύτως καὶ τὸ ποτήριον μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι, λέγων· Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐστὶν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι· τοῦτο ποιεῖτε, ὁσάκις ⸀ἐὰν πίνητε, εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν.
26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
ὁσάκις γὰρ ⸀ἐὰν ἐσθίητε τὸν ἄρτον τοῦτον καὶ τὸ ⸀ποτήριον πίνητε, τὸν θάνατον τοῦ κυρίου καταγγέλλετε, ἄχρι ⸀οὗ ἔλθῃ.
27Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
Ὥστε ὃς ἂν ἐσθίῃ τὸν ⸀ἄρτον ἢ πίνῃ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦ κυρίου ⸀ἀναξίως, ἔνοχος ἔσται τοῦ σώματος καὶ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ κυρίου.
28Let each person examine himself, and then eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
δοκιμαζέτω δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἑαυτόν, καὶ οὕτως ἐκ τοῦ ἄρτου ἐσθιέτω καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ποτηρίου πινέτω·
29For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
ὁ γὰρ ἐσθίων καὶ ⸀πίνων κρίμα ἑαυτῷ ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει μὴ διακρίνων τὸ ⸀σῶμα.
30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number have fallen asleep.
διὰ τοῦτο ἐν ὑμῖν πολλοὶ ἀσθενεῖς καὶ ἄρρωστοι καὶ κοιμῶνται ἱκανοί.
31But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not come under judgment.
εἰ ⸀δὲ ἑαυτοὺς διεκρίνομεν, οὐκ ἂν ἐκρινόμεθα·
32When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.
κρινόμενοι δὲ ⸀ὑπὸ κυρίου παιδευόμεθα, ἵνα μὴ σὺν τῷ κόσμῳ κατακριθῶμεν.
33So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
Ὥστε, ἀδελφοί μου, συνερχόμενοι εἰς τὸ φαγεῖν ἀλλήλους ἐκδέχεσθε.
34If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that your meetings do not bring judgment on you. As for the other matters, I will give directions when I come.
⸀εἴ τις πεινᾷ, ἐν οἴκῳ ἐσθιέτω, ἵνα μὴ εἰς κρίμα συνέρχησθε. Τὰ δὲ λοιπὰ ὡς ἂν ἔλθω διατάξομαι.
