Solomon's Building Projects and the Division of the People
After twenty years, when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and his own palace, he rebuilt the towns that Hiram had given him. He marched to Hamath-Zobah and conquered it. He also built Tadmor in the wilderness and constructed store cities, chariot cities, and fortified cities such as Upper Beth Horon and Lower Beth Horon. To the descendants of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites who remained in the land, he assigned forced labor. But the Israelites were not made to serve as slaves; instead, they served as soldiers, officers, commanders, chariot drivers, and horsemen. There were 250 overseers in charge of the work.
2 Chronicles 8,1-10
1At the end of the twenty years during which Solomon had built the house of the LORD and his own palace,
וַיְהִ֞י מִקֵּ֣ץ ׀ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים שָׁנָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּנָ֧ה שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃
2Solomon rebuilt the towns that Huram had given him, and he settled Israelites in them.
וְהֶעָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤ן חוּרָם֙ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה בָּנָ֥ה שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה אֹתָ֑ם וַיּ֥וֹשֶׁב שָׁ֖ם אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
3Solomon then marched against Hamath-zobah and overpowered it.
וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה֙ חֲמָ֣ת צוֹבָ֔ה וַיֶּחֱזַ֖ק עָלֶֽיהָ׃
4He built Tadmor in the wilderness, along with all the storage towns he built in Hamath.
וַיִּ֥בֶן אֶת־תַּדְמֹ֖ר בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְאֵת֙ כָּל־עָרֵ֣י הַֽמִּסְכְּנ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנָ֖ה בַּחֲמָֽת׃
5He built up Upper Beth-horon and Lower Beth-horon as fortified cities, with walls, gates, and bars,
וַיִּ֜בֶן אֶת־בֵּ֤ית חוֹרוֹן֙ הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן וְאֶת־בֵּ֥ית חוֹר֖וֹן הַתַּחְתּ֑וֹן עָרֵ֣י מָצ֔וֹר חוֹמ֖וֹת דְּלָתַ֥יִם וּבְרִֽיחַ׃
6as well as Baalath and all the storage towns that belonged to him, and all the towns for his chariots and for his cavalry—whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and throughout the land under his rule.
וְאֶֽת־בַּעֲלָ֗ת וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־עָרֵ֤י הַֽמִּסְכְּנוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָי֣וּ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה וְאֵת֙ כָּל־עָרֵ֣י הָרֶ֔כֶב וְאֵ֖ת עָרֵ֣י הַפָּרָשִׁ֑ים וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־חֵ֣שֶׁק שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָשַׁק֙ לִבְנ֤וֹת בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וּבַלְּבָנ֔וֹן וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֥רֶץ מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃
7As for all the people who were left of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not Israelites—
כָּל־הָ֠עָם הַנּוֹתָ֨ר מִן־הַחִתִּ֜י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֤י וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְהַחִוִּ֣י וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹ֥א מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵֽמָּה׃
8that is, their descendants who remained in the land after them, whom the Israelites had not wiped out—Solomon conscripted them for forced labor, as they are to this day.
מִן־בְּנֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר נוֹתְר֤וּ אַחֲרֵיהֶם֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־כִלּ֖וּם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּעֲלֵ֤ם שְׁלֹמֹה֙ לְמַ֔ס עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
9But Solomon did not make slaves of any of the Israelites for his work; they were his fighting men, his officers and captains, and the commanders of his chariots and cavalry.
וּמִן־בְּנֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹא־נָתַ֧ן שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה לַעֲבָדִ֖ים לִמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ כִּי־הֵ֜מָּה אַנְשֵׁ֤י מִלְחָמָה֙ וְשָׂרֵ֣י שָׁלִישָׁ֔יו וְשָׂרֵ֥י רִכְבּ֖וֹ וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃ פ
10These were King Solomon's chief officials—two hundred fifty of them—who supervised the people.
וְאֵ֨לֶּה שָׂרֵ֤י *הנציבים **הַנִּצָּבִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים וּמָאתָ֑יִם הָרֹדִ֖ים בָּעָֽם׃
