Eshcol was an Amorite chieftain who lived near Hebron and was allied with Abraham. He was the brother of Aner and Mamre, and together with Abraham he participated in the rescue mission to free Lot from King Kedorlaomer and his allies. The Valley of Eshcol (Valley of Grapes) near Hebron was named after him.
Eshcol and his brothers Aner and Mamre were Amorites who made a covenant with Abraham and became his allies while he lived at the oaks of Mamre near Hebron.
13One who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol and Aner; these were allies of Abram.
When Lot was captured by King Kedorlaomer and his allied kings, Eshcol went out with Abraham and his brothers to rescue him. They pursued the enemies all the way to Dan.
14When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he mustered his trained men, born in his household, three hundred eighteen of them, and pursued as far as Dan.
Eshtekol was with Abraham when they defeated Kedorlaomer and the allied kings, and rescued Lot along with all the captives and possessions that had been taken.
17After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh, that is, the King's Valley.
Abraham ensured that Eshtekol, Aner, and Mamre received their rightful share of the war spoils after the victory, even though Abraham himself kept nothing for himself.
24I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share belonging to the men who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their share."
The valley near Hebron was called the Valley of Eshkol (Valley of the Cluster). Later, when Moses sent spies into Canaan, they cut a cluster of grapes there, and the place was named after Eshtekol.
23When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes, and two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs.
